well guys I've got the clutch to rebuild but barring disasters of biblical proportions we are going so if you see the old nacker as in profile pic say hello.
just thought I'd let you'll know the dates are confusing 'cos there's a stella alpine car rally on the same date somewhere in Italy. and the guided ride numpties from ride Europe are going 2nd weekend in june. but rest assured every other article say 2nd weekend in july.

I have wanted to go to Stella Alpina for several years but have not happened yet. Do you know if the "road" is only open this second weekend in july, or can I go to the top with my bike any other day?

. It's open all time weather permitting, we did it October a couple of times

I'm afraid that you cannot ride it at any time, there have been restrictions in place for a few years now.
The route that is generally referred to as the 'Stella Alpina' is the Colle del Sommeiller and it is open at all times on the weekend of the Stella but at other times between 1st June - 30th September it is closed to vehicles from Friday to Sunday between 09.00-17.00 hrs.
There is a map on this link which shows the restrictions on all the trails around Bardonecchia . There are signs at the beginning of some of the trails like the Assietta.

I do not know if this information is up to date as the last time I rode there was six years ago.

If you contact the Tourist information centre in Bardo they can be very helpful. Be aware that each region can have restrictions on the same trail. Like you can go up one side of a trail but maybe the tuther side is restricted at certain times.
I was told of tickets /fines being handed out but that was maybe just a story. I know of no-on who got fined on the "stella week" I last attended.

On the Stella weekend in 2010 we met a german guy on a KTM 690 coming off the Assietta who had just been fined 100 euros. Now this may have been just local cops on the take but we didn't go any further to find out :unsure:

Totally agree with you about contacting the tourist office, the police in Bardo are very helpful as well.

Well the ferries booked (Newcastle/Amsterdam) so I'm going somewhere in July, plan is to take 3 days down through Germany etc and 4 days back, no rushing and avoid motorways as much as possible.
