Name a 1960's or 70's bike that is still around that isn't now considered a classic.

To become classic it just needs to become rare.

Not necessarily so. I wouldn't always say that rare equals classic and I can think of plenty of bikes from the '70s that are rare but will never achieve true classic status :pinch:

Jump forward a decade and tell me that most of those revolting factory customs that the Japanese manufacturers insisted on selling us are classics :sick:

30 year old Airhead GS's are fetching £6k

True, but they are not rising price wise. So on that basis it is relevant. We can all look through rose tinted glasses and say ah but they will, but the bottom line is that today they are not, and the worth is the worth in terms of a trade in etc. and sorry, but 8k is cloud cuckoo land.

I have seen this bike and it is in mint condition. Might be worth having a look in the UKGSER for sale section (GS's) and see what (mint)1100 GS's have sold for in the past.

Being an 850 it is in some respects slightly less desirable than the 1100 but my son bought a lovely R850GS via UKGSer a couple of months back. The bike was £2K, plus a spare set of wheels and new tyres, panniers, 'Ard case top box, tank bag, pannier liners, spare screen, and more odds and sods, spares, service kits and the like for a further £500. I thought altogether it was a fair price and even if he does some fairly serious mileage on it (and he will) its not going lose a whole lot of value.

Depends how you define a true classic. Honda Superdream is now seen as a classic, at least you see them at classic shows and on the covers of classic magazines, that was the 70's equivalent of the plastic boring crap machines. That's driven more by nostalgia than any attribute of the bike itself. Who knows if 30 years from now bikers will love a Suzuki Gladius because it was thier first big bike and it runs on really hard to buy "petrol".

In the car world look at the Vauxhall Viva and the Morris Marina. Beige shite! But now considered classics.

Classic has lost its meaning IMO, now it just means old, rare (even if only rare because most of them rusted to pieces), and triggers some nostalgia in the owner.
