Well kind of. These things work like email in that they use your data connection to send things not the SMS or MMS networks. So if you are on WiFi then yes they are free. If you have unlimited data, technically they are free but you'll pay somewhere for your unlimited tariff. The app won't charge you for any of your messages which is where the confusion is with these things.
From what I know on the app. It's supposed to be free first year then 69p per year after. Not exactly a rip off if you like that sort of thing.
Elle... You're not missing much. Most of my contacts just have one thread saying something like "hey... I'm using whatsapp!" Then not much else. Besides, you probably wouldn't have a signal while wild camping so it wouldn't help you there
