Promised myself I was not going to post on this thread again, but when I saw this I was a little disappointed

I remember the last Big ADVrider meet I attended in Wales. I was on my old XR400 with home made screen and wearing old army gear.

There were some lads on new KTM rally prepared bikes wearing all the rally clothing with their blood group stickers on their helmets.

I soon found out why they had these stickers on their helmets when they started crashing as soon as we left the car park :unsure:

Can you tell what year that was, I helped Robbie & Emma in Rhayader and Timpo in North Wales lead runs on most of the ADVrider meets. I simply don’t remember it like you. I remember them and hoped they were very friendly meets for all level of riders on ANY bike wearing ANY thing you liked

It saddens me you saw it this way, Lots of us spent our time making those weekends work. I think I remember you coming down with Basil and Mick ? or Chris UK ?

Its not always how good the bike is ! a lot is down to the rider and only a fool will forget this (thumbs)

Sorry on my ride outs its not what you ride or how good a rider you think you are that matters but I get disappointed if you don’t have great fun (thumbs)

Ooooooh look Mike, a DR350 riding trails in North Wales

Here's a lump of a DRZ making relatively easy work of a fairly nadgery trail in mid-Wales



The "do it all" green lane bike doesn't exist but a DRZ that's had a few bits sorted out will have a good go at most things and won't disgrace itself at all. Mine's done time-card and hare and hound enduros, long distance trials, touring/travel, even motocross practice days. Oh yeah, and green lanes, lots of them; Wales, Devon, Normandy and Spain.

Cheap to buy, cheap to service (long service intervals)

I have a couple of mates who used to run KTM EXC350Fs. They both said they were so easy to ride on the trails that it's almost cheating. Both bikes needed significant engine work with very few hours and have been replaced with 500s.

If I could afford to spend £1,500 every year on engine maintenance/repairs or maybe get a new bike each year then I'd have a 350. I can't so I'll stick with my DRZ and my little 200 stinkwheel.

The DRZ is a heavy beast though so you need to be able to bully it a bit. I rate WR250F as a great green laner and the Honda CRFX can't be discounted either.

Truth is any off road bike will go anywhere with the right tyres, enough torque, some momentum, and a rider with big enough balls.
