If you're loaded 3 up it saves some money getting to a venue which in our case was 75 miles each way.
Plus if you're wearing decent knoblies you don't want to dull the edges too much on tarmac.
Yesterdays jaunt was more of a ride out on the lanes than an adventure tour.
Lightness is everything.

I am not knocking the logic and practicality of this .. and I like the trailer. btw.

what I am knocking is calling a small bike a `do it all` bike .. when a trailer is needed for practical sensible purposes ?

my TTR600 covered the same distances this Monday ... but no trailer ..
it `did-it-all`

(ok.. I wuz knackered cold and wet, and struggled with the weight when stuck in a cold stream on my own ... but I did-it-all)

its just the terminology I am critisizing

Rode my DR250xc Djebel with camping gear to Scotland / Wales & back this year.
Think it's just the occasion & how you feel after a belly full of Christmas pud. :S :P

There lies the Crux of the matter, there isn't one 'Best, No Nonsense, do it all Green Lane Bike' that we could possibly all agree on due to personal experiences, distance to the start of the green lanes, budget, personal predjudice about what should or shouldn't be used on a green lane etc etc etc.
Ride what you want, spend what you want, do what you want but respect others for their choices.
Open your eyes and you see what is in front of you, open your mind and you see a bigger picture but open your heart and you see a whole new World.

If your using intermediate or soft tyres they dont last long on tarmac plus its quite nice after a days riding to get in the car turn the heater on and sit in a comfortable seat driving home as it hammers down with rain (thumbs). I think it depends what do it all bike you have as theres often a trade off between real on and off road capabilities.

Indeed & that's the truth

Spunk £7k on a new whizz bang KTM to look like David Knight, just to ride piss easy trails whilst pouring scorn on someone who turns up on a £1500 trail bike in army camo gear
You and your mate Picos should come out with us in North Wales, Johnny. You can come on your DR's and we will come on our "whizz bang" KTMs etc. You'll quickly find out just how "piss easy" some of the trails are.

Weren't you just asking about a KTM350 exc though..? Are you going all "whizz bang"?

The KLX 450 is 3x the bike the 250 is. It's easier to ride because you don't need to be in exactly the right gear like you need to be on the terribly underpowered 250, it's smooth torque is your friend on muddy trails, you don't need to ride it with the throttle on the stop between trails and its stock suspension has more travel and is of better quality.
The oil and filter doesn't need changing for at the least 2000 miles with trail use, which is a year on UK trails, so I'd be changing the oil on the 250 after a year anyway.
As a trail bike is far better than the 250.
I know I am pissing into the wind on this one!
Looks very good, albeit £2K more than the KLX250. I would say it's a full blown enduro bike, not a trail bike. Any better than WR450 or CRF450X???

If there were loads of trails to play on, I would happily have one!

Just one other point - I haven't found a UK trail yet that the KLX doesn't have enough power for. It is a bit weak on the road though.

I've ridden a few & struggled with a few all over Wales
Some need a great machine & determined rider.
Unfortunately I'm the wrong side of a pension now to chance my limbs on the tough stuff so stick with the trailies to keep me out of trouble by even attempting the realy serious going. (thumbs)

If it's your hobby spend what you can afford. Get the best bike for your budget, good equipment will help, not hinder your learning curve.
If you want to really spunk some brass, buy a 20 grand car for your daily commute and a weekly trip to ASDA, when a Kia or a Hyundai will piss the job.
Who said I was talking about you ;)
