You will love it, born here and still love to travel around, especially through Glen Coe and Etive (this is a dead end but the landscape brings a tear to the eye) though not in the same way as watching Scotland at Rugby.

I am about to spend the rest of the year working in Hull and having the mountains on my doorstep will be missed, though the midges will not.

ide like to do this too, can i ask on your thread lol wots at applecross ? just looked on googlemaps theres nothing there ? its about 600 miles for me from poole, and thats blasting up motorways which i hate

Applecross is out of the way, peaceful and scenic. Stones throw from Kyle / Skye etc.

I live in Hull, Trust me , bring ya bike down.. there is some cracking roads within an hour from hull, The Yorkshire moors, Yorkshire dales, and the Yorkshire wolds....Not as pretty as A82 but lovely roads anyway....Tosh

Great roads everywhere also:-
I can recommend a trip on the Nevis range cable car just outside Fort William, watch the down-hill cycle loonies set off from the platform next to the cafe at the top. Also the Scottish sea life center at Oban

What's in Applecross?, I guess it does look pretty desolate, very good food at the Inn, but a road that has this as a warning is surely worth riding? Kind of puts the 'A' into ABR, in a tame tarmacadam sort of way...
Also, a completely different aspect from this is the six mile freewheel back down towards this sign. Silent running sure does feel weird. hmy:

Edit: It's the Alps' in miniform. It has a triple switchback series of hairpins that would fool you into being somewhere a lot further south.

Glencoe Nice, keep going.
Skye / Applecross Nice, keep going.
Ullapool Nice, keep going.
Near the top yet, No? good, turn left to Achmelvich for a nice wee Youth Hostel. Only about 20 beds and you may need to book. Lovely, nay, Beautiful, Fantastic white sands, and blue sea. No Pub or Chippy, so go prepared with lots of midgy spray too.

That's my tip. Found the spot quite by accident.

I'm looking forward to hearing about the "hidden Gem" you never planned on going to but found.
