The OP may have lost interest in this but another option which I’ve just been looking at is the ‘Via Michelin’ App. I’ve used the Motogoloco website for some time but it doesn’t seem to work on the Ipad anymore.

The ViaMichelin planner has the added benefit of discovery mode which throws up some interesting routes especially if you turn off tolls and motorways. The app is free and easy to use.

I've just come back from Italy. I've a nice route from Lyon to Pigna if you are interested. Could send you the gpx file although from London to Lyon it's mostly motorways and départementale (a roads)
