The R850GS is 17 years and 90k miles old, so spending upwards of £1000 to repair a bike barely worth £2000 would seem a bit mad, especially having just splashed money on it very recently!
I don,t think a BMW of that pedigree is ever a complete loss unless the frame has been folded in half in an accident. My choice of bikes a while ago was between a BMW F800gs and a Yamaha xt660 tenere. The BMW won just on the fact it was a twin and i thought it would be smoother on the road. If you can afford it stash the BMW away until you can afford to repair it a bit at a time.

Yea see where your coming from they are nice bikes but iam waiting now for the t7 concept to come out and then decide as wanted a 701 before my wife decided to book the holiday which as just set me back 5000 upto now ... my bike I use for trails and green lanes and can travel distances etc if your arse can withstand the seat and there not an arm and a leg in price it's the mz baghira 660 look them up I don't no one person that wishes they got rid ... they have a proven engine with the yamaha 5 valve 660 engine that was in the tenere and the szr there were aprilias and quads with the engine in to ... quailtiy is good never missed a beat mine and the parts are descent all acrebis and wp suspension behr wheels etc and you would get one for 2000 then you have a 1000 to ready it for your adventures ... parts are a bit of a pain but I use a guy in Germany at mopart.de as it's a German bike but to be far there's a world of lovers out there so there's forums of guys doing upgrades etc still and slipstream said to me when I emailed they could get 86 bhp coming from the back wheel if I was willing to spend the money but that's more for racing and I only use mine for tinkering around and green lanes ... to be far I've been a few good lanes lately and it just glides over them with ease ...the biggest downfall for me is the tank ...iam yet to find the bigger tanks that they did for it ..I've been in touch with acrebis etc and no one makes them anymore and iam yet to see one for sale ... I don't think I'll ever get rid of mine not until it does anyway but there are people saying the engines do a good 70,000 / 80,000 miles with out any engine issues if well looked after and serviced ... I would buy another that's for sure great for the lanes and great for the country lanes to as I have both sets of wheels :)
All things built not bought . The only way is adventure .

There's an X-Country on UKGSER at £2200 if that's any good to you.

If you're not a member, here's the blurb:
Shows 16,468 on dash now, but that was replaced at 10,880 (dash unit failed) so true mileage is 25,348. I’m the second owner, the woman I bought it from got it ex-demo from Blue Bell in Crewe. Runs nicely, passed the last couple of MOTs without a problem (once I reattached the missing passenger footpeg). Some corrosion on front of engine, been “treated” by me with ACF-50, last service at May 2014 when new tyres were fitted fore and aft, less than 300 miles on them now.

Extras included, windscreen, handguards, Leo Vince road legal exhaust, ramball mount, rear luggage frame and Pelicase. The last owner had Oxford heat grips fitted, the wiring is a bit rough, and I’ve not used them. ABS fitted and working.

It’s been cared for, is in fair condition for age and mileage, the engine pulls well, and doesn’t seem to use any oil. MOT is September from memory, and I last used it when I did the last test, family commitments seem to consume all my spare time, and I’m not sure it makes good sense to keep what is regarded by some as the best of the small BMWs in the garage getting in my way if all I’m going to do is MOT it every year.

This is my second XCountry, the first was an ex ORS 58 year yellow one, about half the miles but this one is the nicer ride I think, possibly due the clutch not having been worked hard.

Available to view about six miles south-west of Reading, but at only at agreed times. Sorry, not being a dealer I can’t insure test rides, and don’t want to take the risk of it being test ridden for all eternity by some thieving git. Cash only, £2200, and in answer to “how low will I go” I’m too fat to be a good limbo dancer, so not very. Set of cush rubbers included, plus some receipts etc
Where is your "broken" 850 for sale?

Get it sorted, it's a very robust engine, don't know the mileage but even so suspect it just needs a top end rebuild - find a good independant and if he wants more than £500 including parts he's probably ripping you off.

Unfortunately resurrecting this thread; the R850GS spluttered into life a couple of days after the original post, and I've still no idea what the issue was! It was running absolutely perfectly until last week when it cut out on me in the pissing rain on the M3. From all collective evidence, it seems to be the well known hall-effect sensor problem, which I'll get replaced, but I'm starting to feel like the bike could do with a new owner with a bit more time and expertise to polish the bike up.

As well as looking for interest in the GS, I'm also still looking for a replacement bike circa £3k; as in the earlier posts, I'm still interested in the Tenere etc etc!

Honda CB500Xs can be had for less than £3K. They do 80 mpg, and you can use the money saved to upgrade the suspension etc.

I've been looking at those actually; really good value bike, it just looks like it needs a good bit of money spent on it before you can even think of taking it off-road! With the Rally Raid kit though, it looks like a really decent mini Africa Twin.
