I use 520 chains with a split link 90% of the time so I don't need to expand a soft link. I have a very old Reynolds chain link removal tool--the one with actual chain links as part of the design. I simply grind off the rivet heads flush and then its so easy to push the link out with the old Reynolds kit. I know it sounds extreme but on a long trip where there are no services I carry a cheap and small 12v Rotary tool that will power off the battery or accessory socket, two or three stones (Dremel type), and a short length of chain and a couple of split links. That way I can grind rivet heads down, push links out easily, and pop in a couple of links and a chain length with the split links. The whole package doesn't take up much room and I'd rather carry it than be stuck should I (or a travelling companion) be stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken chain. The cheap little rotary tool won't set the world alight, but it gets there, and I've tested it to make sure that I can do the job. I bet that there are other odd problems that can be sorted with such a tool and few Dremel type accessories!

Well thanks for the replies Gents some good suggestions I think myself & a mate are going to go 50/50 on something decent and stay away from the cheap stuff. Reminded me of a 'cheap' diesel compression tester a mate bought recently for his van, got to the 5th cylinder & under pressure the crimp on the pipe gave way & the gauge ripped off with about 220 psi behind it. Cost us both a new pair of pants & a repair to the garage roof. On attempting to rejoin it with a jubilee clip we then noticed the hose was only rated to half what the rest of the kit was supposed to be anyway :S

any difference other than price?

That's what I've struggled with as you say the sealey 'branded' vs779 can be got for £30 on there but I can't work out if it's just the same as the cheap kit with their name & margin on top. I know you can get varying qualities in the stuff that all looks the same so I'm hoping it's more towards the top end of the crap scale as that's the one we're ordering. I Can always blame Big AL if it's junk mind

That's the same as I've got, paid £15-£20 on a stall a few years ago and I think they are all the same or they seemed to be when I have looked at other branded ones on tool stalls.

There's no difference other than the label.
Both a crap, these are the generic ones that bend/brake the pins

i agree ... crap!

the one I had, I even cracked the screw-in bolt .. as well as the pins. waste of time. don't get anything that even LOOKS like them

o .. and the handle didn't fit anyway.

They look exactly like my MotionPro one. right down to the case layout (although my case is silver) I've had mine for around 15 years and it's done everything from superbike to trials bike chains. I don't need to grind the rivet off on a 520 but I would on something bigger.

Obviously mine is what was copied to produce these.
