Stayed at the Hotel Forsthaus just outside Volkesfeld a couple of times. Nothing fancy but very friendly and good value.

+1 for Cochem, lovely place with afair bit to do inc cable car up to high view point, cracking view and chill out with a pint of cloudy beer (thumbs)

Can recommend the Hotel Zur Post in Klotten, right on the Mosel - dedicated bike parking andthe owner, Klaus, is a local foodie writer and cooks fantastic local dishes.

Thats the thing they never show you about the Mosel ... that bloody railway... but it does mean cheap and quick transport between locations for a day off the bikes sampling the local wines and beers

You can't really see or hear the railway line anywhere along the Mittel Mosel from Piesport to Zell and that stretch has some cracking places to visit and stay, including Bernkastel Kues. It's hardly intrusive everywhere else (maybe the hotel you talk about in Klotten excepted) and certainly doesn't spoil the overall enjoyment of the area I'm sure (unless maybe you're a miserable hard-to-please type - in which case you might struggle to enjoy anywhere). In any event, the train journey from Mittel Mosel to Trier or especially Koblenz, has much to recommend it and allows you to see things you wouldn't from the road - as well as being able to enjoy a drink! But then, what do I know?

Thanks for all the tips, I've decided to base myself in the north of region in Aachen for a few days (thumbs)

I booked a few days in an apartment in Monschau yesterday afternoon ready for the break between the Assen MotoGP sand the Spa classics weekend but until now it's not been an area I've really thought about visiting.

I'm looking forward to it because it's close enough to Belgium to do a cross border raid if fancy a croque monsieur one lunchtime (thumbs)

Yep, most people just ride through on thier way south, I've choose Aachen as I'm meeting some fellow riders at Calais and heading down the coast to Saint-Valery-sur-Somme on-route to a long weekend with www.bikenormandy.com , so I don't want to be that far away, there looks to be a few nice routes around Rursee/Rurburg (thumbs) Monschau look nice, will have to make that a dinner destination on one of the days B)

We'll be back before you go so I'll give you some feedback on which bars are the sleaziest (thumbs)

Hotel Hubertus in Klotten is good, it's a winery too. Zur Post is good, as mentioned, but singles get stuck in the loft rooms which can be unbearably hot. Berg Eltz is a nearby castle which is well worth a visit.

Yes I would definitely recommend cochem area great bike place and the road around there are superb also I found a far better attitude towards bikers when you walk in to cafes etc
