If you just fancy buying into the culture then buy the one you like the look of the most. Almost all modern bikes are good enough. However if you intend to actually start going " off road " then I would seriously reconsider. While its immensely good fun it is very hard work and if you are as old and unfit as you say you only end up doing it once or twice before packing it in. Guys that get hooked on it very quickly realize their bikes are on the big side and embark on a series of downscaling their bikes until they buy a proper off road enduro bike to go with their adventure bike, right back up the top end of the scale, where they started from

so in short....buy a bike that YOU like,a bike that does everything that YOU want it to do,a bike that suits YOUR budget...rather than a bike that fits into a certain pidgeon hole.whatever you get just make the time to get out there and enjoy it (thumbs)

As has been said before - you can have an adventure on any bike (thumbs)

So hang around and chew the fat - you might find yourself off on an adventure one day and in need of some advice and there's plenty of that to be had on here :)
