somebody gives you their word after an accident and you believe them, don't make me fu*king laugh :laugh:

and then you find out a week later that their suing you for damage to their vehicle and blaming you for the accident

Like I already said in my first post,I've been at fault and the other person said forget about it! I'm just glad I live in the north of Scotland....life seems a lot more chilled up here! (thumbs)

As a young soldier, I reversed a 1 tonne ambulance into an Audi.

I went into the shop to find the owner - and was very honest about it all.

There was a teeeny scratch on the Audi - and zero damage to the Amby. He said, "Look - won't you get disciplined if you get caught for this?" (Yep) "So, why don't I call you next week with the cost of the touch up - and you can pay it, and we'll keep schtum?"


Great - I thought - and agreed.


3 days later, a bill for over £2500 arrives - as he later "discovered" that his boot was damaged and so on. (Utter Bullshit)

He wanted cash and he wanted it now - or he'd report me for failing to report an accident etc - and I'd end up in Military Jail.

Long story short - I ended up borrowing the money from an unreputable local lender, and missing a payment - due to being on exercise - they reported me to the boss - and it all came out in the wash.

My CO didn't lock me up - but it contributed to me leaving the Army not long afterwards - my Credit Score was damaged for ages - it was awful.

And all because the guy thought he could screw a young naive lad out of some money.

My mate sat at a red light doing a road test after a service got rammed from behind by a van he ended up in hospital, he's back at work but struggling

Many years ago i was sitting at a junction of a 30 and 60 mainroad on a wee vt600. Suddenly i felt the back of my bike lift and i was pushed out into the main road. I was rolling for the kurb before the bike was on the ground. All i remember was the screech of a car brakes as a car driveing alone the main road {Bloody good reactions from him} stopped only a couple of feet from me and the bike. Not a happy bunny i jumped up to confront the driver who had drove into my rear wheel. Instantly i recognised him, he was very apologetic and promised he would pay for any damage which he did. Problem was he,d clearly been drinking. I diddent remark on it as he was an old comrade/friend of my fathers and they had served together in Korea. Both are long gone now but i still think about my decision.

Well here is a quick update.
Wheel checked and all fine.
Mudguard looked like it was sprung a bit as it climbed onto the cars plastic bumper. No serious damage, the bridge piece is a tiny bit one sided and there is a small bit of touching up in a couple of places near to the fork legs. It appears to have sprung at the part where the mudguard dips in around the fork legs. No cracking of the metal, so that's good news.
The tyre seems to be running out of true. Hardly surprising considering the impact, although not fast, was a solid old bump. Anyway to play safe I'll be fitting a new tyre. Rear tyres failing can be interesting, front tyre going can be bloody lethal.

As arranged, Sam, the car driver came around this morning to have a look at the bike and to pay for any damage caused. I had left the checking gauge taped onto the fork leg to show him the wheel was true and that the tyre was rubbing slightly on the fork bridge piece. As expected he was quite happy to see that the damage was no worse. I said, " just pay for the tyre and we can call it quits, I'll sort the rest. I won't let other people mess with my bikes. He gave me £100 to cover the cost of a tyre and we each signed two copies of an agreement stating the cause of the accident, liability and that the money paid was full and final settlement for both parties.

So there we are. Unfortunate event but worse things happen. All sorted. (thumbs)

PS. I do agree with some of the more sceptical comments regarding taking the word of the other party in any accident. As a rule, don't take the word of a stranger in a similar situation. It would be all too easy for them to claim that you went into the rear of their vehicle. My bump was a lot easier to sort out as the guy was very local to me in the village and I would soon be knocking on his door.

I'm not saying I 100% agree with you, but I understand where you're coming from. I hit a car with the bike (not paying attention, the three cars in front stopped abruptly, I swerved around and hit the car immediately in front of me with the pannier causing a scuff to the rear bumper), pulled over to apologise, lady driver was quite ok and I offered to pay damage to her car if she took it to a bodyshop without going through insurance, she agreed at the side of the road. I requested this as I was a new rider and to keep premium down I upped the excess as far as it would go (many hundreds, more than a bit of paint). Got a call week later saying she was going through insurance....told her I would rather settle outside but she was adamant. I never heard anything further and didn't pay out any cash in the end, but a brown pants moment for a while.

good to here that your ok the bikes not to bad and theres still some decent people out there (thumbs)
