Any recommendations for decent base and mid layers?

Best base layer I've ever had is merino wool long sleeve vest and longjohns. Keep you warm and stops you getting smelly.

Halvarssons for my wife and myself on our current RTW trip (http://www.tiger800rtw.com). We have both tops and long johns in 100% merino wool. The tops have just about worn out, we've had them since 2009, and have given great service. We've just replaced the tops with the new Halvarssons winter base layers. Interestingly, these are now only 49% merino wool and made in China. The previous model was 100% merino wool and made in Sweden. We'll have to see if the new ones are as effective at suppressing smells  as the old ones.

We've not really tested the new merino/Outlast tops yet, only just got them (we're in Mexico and Janette's parents bought them over last week :) ) but I'm already thinking I wished we had gone for a 100% merino product. Time will tell.
