I've got the View Ranger app and its cool but nothing is as good as a waterproof OS map. The perfect combo for me is to use a phone app to find out where I am and then a marked map to look at my route. Maps don't break or run out of batteries also you can show them to each other easier. Also if you need fuel you can show them to an old person and they can help without spectacles.

If you use apps its best not to use ones that rely on data downloads. Speaking as a mobile telecoms engineer I can confirm rural coverage is appalling on all networks in the UK.
