Volunteering is dangerous though - my side of it got a bit out of hand! Love it though and I also really like the atmosphere amongst people who volunteer. Cheers to all of you who have signed up to help out already!!!!

Sorry Steve, I started my own thread re: the HUBB before I found this one.
It is indeed a fantastic weekend away with something for every one and next year I will be hosting a presentation following my "Arctic highway adventure" and presuming the Polar bears don't get me.
If they do it will be Maria talking about measures you can take to avoid this when wild camping in the Arctic circle :woohoo:

Can't wait for next year's HUBB - I never thought I would enjoy a weekend litter picking and cleaning showers so much :woohoo:
Maybe I have a thing for yellow marigolds and just hadn't realised it before

Not sure which talk would be the most entertaining
Joking apart we're looking forward to hearing about your next adventure

For my 1st HU event, I volunteered and I thought the same as you but after being there, I totally understood why you don't get a freebie. It's an extremely well organised event and it'd be chaos without volunteers.
My only reservation about volunteering is that 4+ hour stints seems a lot of time. I missed out on a lot of presentations last time.
Will this change Sam?
Can I just volunteer for 1 day?

Elle, I would agree with that, I did the gate crew and ended up missing a few lectures I had earmarked. However I guess if more people step up to the plate then perhaps 1 or 2 shorter stints are very possible :woohoo:

Hi Elle and Gavinski, Thanks for the thumbs up. Volunteers doing some hours over the event are absolutely vital to it all happening with the relaxed way the HUBB UK does. It's a bit like being on the road I guess, everyone helping everyone else. One of the feedback comments we get the most is that mucking in for a few a hours is an amazing way to make friends - not only the people you are volunteering with but those you meet as a result of the role you are helping with.
Um, sounds like you two got the short straws! Sorry. I must have either stuffed up or been stuck... Usually the only crews we ask people to do stints longer two hours at a time are the Presentation, Registration and the First Aid Crews. Though it does happen that sometimes someone falls out at the last minute and then people are asked to cover their slots.
First Aid are on call so can be out and about with a walkie talkie - that means they can get involved with pretty much anything - except the beer that is .
Registration because there's a fair bit to learn with the paperwork. Far from rocket science but enough to make 2 x 4 hour stints needed. 1 more if we don't get enough volunteers
and a person signed up for the role is happy to do more.
Presentation because we have 5 presentation rooms running through most of the event and we never get enough people volunteer. Its a role which needs good IT skills - the guys make sure people's presentations are set up ok, and are there in case of any problems during a presentation and make it easy for presenters to keep on time track. I'm not smart enough for the role but I'm told that though more hours are involved, one of the bonuses is that you have a front row seat for a good number of presentations.
Mostly we aim for people to do a couple of two hours stints on a crew which mean that over the four days its not a chore but fun. As you say Gavinski, the more volunteers we have doing 2 x 2 hour stints then its easy on everyone. Anyone else out there fancy joining the guys? Help it all to happen? Love to have your help for a couple of stints.
Hmm, just seen the time. Better scoot. I'm heading to Holyhead to catch the ferry over to the Ireland HU today. Never been before. really looking forward to it. Leaving at 6 - lovely day already for the ride. See you in a few days.
