I sold my 990 last month as it's just not light or nimble enough for the more technical lanes of Devon, plus when I did mt Balkans trip in May, there were 33 of us and 20 of those riders were on 690's and I must say that I was very impressed with it on the road and off.

I am now the owner of a 690 :-) and must say that it is the most fun I've had from a bike in while, especially with the function of changing the mapping(3 fuel modes from 1 - 3, with 1 like riding a 400cc on techical, 2 for fire trail stuff, 3 is just pre animal!! Brill for the roads) I rode it up to the Peaks from Devon last week, so could cruise at 80mph and still have plenty more, then when i went greenlaning it was like riding my WR250 for lightness and nimbleness.

I will be keeping this bike for a very long time! BTW with the standard tank of 12 litres, I was getting about 120mile between fuel lights coming on.

A few people have said that a 990 is a road bike that can do some off road and a 690 is an off road bike that can do some road work.

Having both in the shed

I find that I rarely bring out the 950 but I still won't sell it

I'm more inclined to ride tracks & trails than motorways but I've had the 690 in both SW & SE Europe so I know it's well able to travel distances

You will need a bit of work on the seat for long distance stuff & the small headlight fairing does seem to take away a lot of the wind blast

The fuel range hasn't been an issue & unless your doing some long distance stuff I'd try it for a while as is

The fully kitted RallyRaid bike is a cracking looking bike & very functional

If I could only have one it'd be the 690 (but the throttle on the 950 is addictive)

Would agree with what everyone has said, 690 will do it all with a few modifications, i would still have mine only i found out that there wasn't a rekluse clutch available for one so bought a 950adv and fitted one to that.
You wont go wrong with either a 950 or a 690 to be honest

I love the 950SE but it's not a 690. So much heavier and less nimble. If he was going to do that he may as well stick with a 950 adv.

Also reedro, don't discount a husky 630. Similar performance to a 690 but much cheaper. The 690 has a little more torque but there's barely any difference overall, and the 630 is smoother and the ride is more plush. No reason why you can't turn one into a rally bike..

good point the new husky are a cracking machine.

im just in love with the se right now as a do everything bike.

Hi,
I began with a 640 Adv, I do a fair bit of overland travel, Morocco, Spain, Anndorra etc. After 4 yrs I wanted a replacement but KTM let us all down by not following up with a small Adv, so I went to speak to Rally Raid. They produce a purpose built bike to your your specs, it is expensive but everything has been thoroughly tested and does as it says on the tin. The 690 Adv by RR is a fast, light, economical circa 60 mpg, and easy bike to ride. It can be fitted with RR's excellent pannier racks which will carry the GL bags with ease. In this config the bike will go anywhere. Perhaps one thing to watch for the 690 Enduro R is in original config inherently light at the front, when loaded it will wheely easily. I have compensated by fitting the v useful front fuel tanks which takes the bike's endurance to around 250 miles on semi piste conditions. Its a joy to ride. It is no slouch as a few 1200 cc type others have noted.
