Just caught this in an email whereby anyone in Utah (living or visiting) must complete an online course and prove they have done it before riding off-road. Is it a good idea or a pointless exercise?

If it keeps the trails open its better than the proposed alternatives of closing some. I can't recall the exact access rights but think these trails are not public roads and that access is via vehicle permit, so it's not to much to ask those buying permits to read and understand some ground rules.

I seem to remember that the American magazine 'Dirt Bike' made a film about off-road riding in Utah about 10 or 15 years ago that had a 900 mile route through the state that was completely off-road . Hopefully it's still on the internet, somewhere .

A good idea if you ask me.
Seems a small price to pay for the land they get to ride on.

Greetings,
Thanks Alan for the link but to the Authorities no thanks
The trails that are used in these American adventures generally are not part of the public highway nor private land. The land areas are vast and uninhabited unlike here in the UK where every section of land is effectively owned by somebody, a company or an Authority.
Training is already provided by GLASS and the TRF, plus a number of commercial training companies, but unfortunately there are too many people who hold such values in contempt. Some will join the associations or clubs just to find routes and less known or Policed areas and it is this few that cause the problems for the majority.
Areas of private land used for authorised trials are revisited later by some people who mess the place up and that gets us all a bad reputation. Irresponsible bikers are not the only problems as seen in the widening of footpaths, the volume of general rubbish, fly tipping and even human excrement left adjacent to nature by other activities. Commentators in the link make similar points.
We already have legislation for driving licenses, road fund, insurance, MOT testing and despite these there are far too many idiots riding around with none of the compliances. Too few Police and lack of parental and community guidance. As Pamela Stevenson in the Not The Nine a'Clock News said - off with their goolies! Rant over

Hugh.
Ps we don't ride 'off road', we simply ride tarmac and non tarmac roads.

Re: Online training to legally ride off-road!
great video .. would love to do tat
didn't see many gates though?
sounds like that license thing is just for show, maybe to bring attention to yobs leaving gates open?
I suppose the fields are much bigger there in the US of A .. and bigger cows too?
I can imagine a stampede of buffalo trying to get through that open gate.
and i guess the gates are many miles apart?
not like our quaint little homesteads here.
never left a gate open here, unless it was already open.
and i guess even the uk yobs would close a gate, even if to hide their route?
don't really `get it` ?
perhaps the americans are obsessed with `biker gangs` ... that Marlon's fault !!
o .. and they got guns !!
seen 'em shoot those nice easy riders right blown off.
but i think that dukes sherrif will get 'em in the end.
the rear end.
