Garmin or TomTom

So my KTM 990 already has a TomTom cradle and power hardwired into it, makes it attractive to get a Tom Tom.... However one of the main functions I want is to be able to set off road/green laning tracks. Is this something a TomTom can do or is the best option to get a Garmin Zumo 660? I suspect its the latter, though the former will invariably be the cheaper option!

Garmin all the way.
I use Memory Map to plot off road routes on my PC.
Upload to the Zumo and follow.
Simples.

I'm not sure you can do that on the Tom Tom

Take a look at the Garmin Montana - You can use OS maps and traditional 2D and 3D Sat Nav style navigation.

was having a look at that on-line, £430 is the cheapest I've seen, preferablle to the Zumo then? Adventure Spec recommend them as well

If you want to go green laning - yes.

You can use the Zumo to follow an off-road route you have prepared, but it won't "appear" on the map.

The Montana seems to do everything, but you have to buy the bike mount seperately and they seem to be hard to find at the moment.

I've been doing a bit of digging around on this topic over the last few nights & tend to agree, that 'Montana' looks as though it does it all. However I'm also looking at the 62 series as well. Haven't quite made my mind up yet

However of all the brands, Garmin seem to be the way to go - if you use a Mac, they look to have a neat little route planning app that you can download for free

I am a Garmin Man Myself.

I use a Garmin Colorado for Green laning and Both my Morocco and Croatia trips, I have the Zumo on my road bike.

But def saving up for the montanna for my big (RTW) trip hopefully in 2013

for me both products are very good within their limits,ie citys ect ,a,to/ b,/ please dont loose the art of map reading with tapograghy you can look over the horizion cheers moto al . f all i know ???

I've got a bit of confession to make - I have a Sat Nav fetish

I've got a Garmin 60cs for greenlaning primarily, the detail and accuracy is amazing (its a bit more limited on the road) + its totally waterproof and works off batteries which are long lasting.

I've also got an TOMTOM which is by far the friendliest Sat Nav to use, though not waterproof and no good for greenlaning + map updates are expensive. Mine's got too old to update maps at a sensible cost now, so its a back up unit.

I also bought a Road Angel Adventurer 7000 6 months ago as a back up which is fully waterproof, has good road and off road capability - (now surplus to requirements)....

as I have just bought a Garmin Zumo 220 which is great on the road, reasonable for greenlaning, fully waterproof (comes with ram and car mount and is circa £300 now). Garmin lifetime maps are cheap and comes as standard with European mapping.

Have you thought about the Garmin GPSMap 62S running OS maps? I use mine with OS and Memory Map as well. It works really well when out in the sticks!
