Gas Gas Pampera - wanted.

Post by Hugh »

Greetings,

Do any of you folks have or know somebody who is selling a Gas Gas Pampera?

I don't want to spend mega money just thinking about getting one to substitute my Alp 4.0 which I am now finding to be a bit on the heavy side. Pity because the Alp is such a good bike and very useful for getting between lanes on the tarmac.

there's a Mk II here

https://bvm-moto.co.uk/New%20and%20Used ... ls%20Bikes

For £3k!

Which is what I paid for my MK III brand new. The Mk II is generally held to be inferior to the Mk I and Mk III.

A year or so back there was a tidy Mk III in my local dealer North Cornwall Motor Cycles at £2.5K. It sold straight away.

An alternative suggestion...for about the same price...a Beamish Suzuki

http://www.beamishownersclub.com/for-sale/bikes.html

the bikes for sale here look like top price show ponies...there are probably cheaper ones about.

You should be able to get a lighting set installed, if you wanted lights. Fantastic looking bikes IMO, and probably more robust than a Pamp.

(Got me thinking....no no no, no more bikes....ride the ones you've got.)

Or a 4-stroke Honda trials bike?

this one's got a Miller frame, plus standard bits

Very cool

Greetings,

Richard thanks for the research and advice.

I went out for a bimble yesterday on the Serow and at the end of the afternoon the fingers were starting to ache and try to lock when holding the clutch lever in, so I am thinking that a hydraulic clutch is the way to go as a master cylinder might be easier to modify if things get worse.

I don't understand why the red ebay Pampera should be on so many websites, not get any bids and be readvertised if it is so good, more importantly why did it need a new piston and the bore repaired if not being ridden for so long?

So, still looking.

It only takes one foreign object to damage the bore...damage rather than wear.

I've been told that a clean air filter is vital to maintaining the health of these bikes.

Personally, I think it's over-priced. The Mk II is, in my eyes, a bit of a lash up. The side stand can rub on the rear brake, for example.

Mk III is better.

The clutch on the Pamperas are so light you can use 1 finger. The engine has so much tourque at the bottom end that you don't often need to feather the clutch but if you need more torque you can fit the header pipe and exhaust from a TXT trials bike.
The only downside is build quality but they are simple to work on although a bit tight around the radiator area. A common mod is to move the plastic rad guard down the frame and secure with cable ties to stop the rad clogging with mud.
Open your eyes and you see what is in front of you, open your mind and you see a bigger picture but open your heart and you see a whole new World.

I'd say it's a seller's market for Pamperas. I think a lot of the MK IIIs were bought up by a guy running a trail bike tour company.

My view on the BVM bike: used cars and motorbikes from dealers in the Gloucs/Stroud area always seemed over-priced to me when I lived there. I always used to travel to buy.

That MkII is probably the best MkII you can buy, but I still don't think it's actually worth £3k. £500 off that, and maybe you could start talking...

I've taught a few people who had never ridden a motorbike before to ride on my Pamp. Tape the throttle shut, and they can learn clutch control and gearchanging without worry...it has easily enough bottom-end power.

A Pampera reminds me a bit of what the old WWII pilots used to say about the Tiger Moth basic trainer..."an easy aircraft to fly, but a difficult aircraft to fly really well."

With an expert rider (not me) a Pamp can go places that you'd think only Graham Jarvis, or a proper trials bike, could go.

If you do get one though, don't put gear oil in the gearbox...that mistake cost me £100+ for a new clutch pack! Mineral engine oil 10W-30 only with no low friction additives is what you want. I get mine from an American car specialist.

Know the feeling Hugh,

Took the Mille out for a gallop this am. It's a couple of miles at least in any direction before I get to a road without a green stripe in the middle.
Took the 'adventure' route home across the old airfield and did about 7 miles of narrow lanes at low speed...not used to clip-ons any more and the Mille has a moderately-heavy clutch (it's not so bad if you are riding fast, as it has an unusual intake vacuum assist mechanism.). Quite a sore left hand by the time I got home!

Give Rob a call at Adventureride he will probably know of some for sale, I've pointed one out in the past but he wasn't in need of any more at the time.

Greetings, thanks Snaf,

I have sent an email to Rob. I had ridden with him a few years ago and he is a really nice chap.
I would and have recommended his Adventure school in the past. We had a great day out and of course not knowing the lanes made it all the more intriguing.
Fingers crossed.
