David, looks like your fears are founded and the cases in German meat processing factories have gone up to a worrying level.
More worrying for the UK is the fact that we (we meaning the gobshites in charge) will probably ignore this warning and do fuck all to stop the same thing happening here if it isn't allready.

P.S. I understand this is a motorcycle forum and I am probably pissing people off by bringing this thread back to the top all the time.......

Everything's connected. If countries like Brazil, the U.S. and to an extent the U.K. continue to ignore warning signs and prioritise the appearance of economic normality over disease prevention safety, there WILL be second or even third waves of virus, which will close these economies back down again. The border barriers would inevitably go back up and you can kiss goodbye to any motorcycle holidays and tours abroad if that happens. So it's a totally legitimate subject for debate here on ABR, and possibly the most relevant one to us all right now.

So the second wave arrives in Korea soon after relaxing social distancing..........Germany appears to also be entering the second wave after relaxation.
Will the UK Government heed the warnings and backtrack on its plans for further relaxing its phony lockdown?....will it fuck.
Businesses have complained about the 2 metre rule and its business that gets listened to by this mob above all else, not science or even the bleeding obvious that events in the world should be telling them.

Can they not see that in the medium - long term this will cost not only thousands more lives but also the Economy?...perhaps they can (don't forget they are in a protected class that will remain on top no matter how things collapse around them)

I believe the government view is if they close things down and the economy goes tits up (which it will of course) then they get the blame and lose votes, whereas if they let the Virus cause the damge then it was out of their hands and of course it will kill of a few thousand unproductive oldies which is an economic bonus.

Sadly I think you are right with this assumption. :(

But a lot of those unproductive oldies vote for them, regularly, and regardless of how awful they are. So I'm not quite sure if that level of cynicism would serve their ends. It does kind of fit with the Cummins school of thinking, however, which seems to be up for a bit of social darwinism and Ayn Rand - type ideology. It depends if you believe there is any of that old school one-nation sort of thinking left in the Tory party, or if it has completely moved to the libertarian hard-right dark side.

I think the current Tory party’s main aim is to stay in power in order to fulfil the desires of its extremely rich members and donors. The headlong push to deliver a hard Brexit to preserve their offshore tax havens, regardless of the consequences for the economy in the light of Covid 19, is a clear example of this. They really could not care less about anything else. Hence those Tories who had cheered the years of austerity and cuts in the NHS were standing up and applauding Boris’s claims that he was going to invest in public services and build new hospitals etc at the last election. Unfortunately the majority of the media in this country is owned by the same bunch of ultra rich tossers and the majority of the population believe their lies.
Covid 19 its impact and topics like Brexit are valid in the pub section of this forum because they will impact on the members of this forum. Our ability to own, ride and go on ‘adventures’ will, to a greater or lesser extent, be impacted by these things therefore they merit discussion. To be honest, they have a greater impact on many of us than what the latest farkels are for the latest KTM etc. although that is obviously an equally valid topic for the forum.
Cheers

Covid appears to be a recurring problem in meat plants globally, in spite of the workers already using PPE pre-crisis. I was talking to a temperature controlled specialist haulier in Chicago last week and he says it is a recurrent problem there. Also now breaking out in large plants in the UK.
Best explanation I have heard is the workers are in unavoidable close proximity, there is little or no natural light, and chilled air is recirculated around the plant.

FFS, I was going to stop posting on this thread but I am seriously peed off now.

Unproductive oldies?
My wife and I both worked hard for 45 years, paid all our taxes, and saved like mad so we hopefully don’t become a burden on the state and can enjoy our retirement.
Our savings and investments produce profits for the banks etc, who in their turn (usually) pay yet more tax.
We spend money on goods and services so VAT is paid and the companies we frequent also pay rates and taxes.
Pretty much everything we do produces money for the country and you have the $¥€§¥$€ nerve to suggest sacrificing ‘unproductive‘ oldies.

Unlike the idiot yoof who have just ignored guidance/rules and congregated in groups and shown no respect for general health, we dutifully stayed at home from March until we were allowed to wander around unfettered but even then, we haven’t gone shopping other than a couple of click and collect so a bit of respect is due IMHO, not being told we are sacrificial.

I would suggest alternative social groups you could get rid of instead but wishing a nasty death on them, or pretty much anyone, isn’t particularly pleasant. I really hope you make it to being an oldie and don’t get culled.

We all have differing views, aspirations, history, etc and most things on here are said a bit tongue in cheek ( I hope).
