Titanium Welding Rod

Post by Flyfifer »

Moderator, please move if this is in the wrong place.

Does anybody on here have hands on knowledge of grade 2 titanium welding rod ?
I have never used Titanium wire tent pegs but the notion of tough shepherds crook style pegs appeals.
I appreciate all of the downsides of small diameter pegs.

Titanium Welding rod can be had for a fraction of proprietary titanium pegs.
I fancied wasting some time diy ing some pegs from it.

The question is are these rods tough, bend resistant. Anybody know.???

Yes they are tough, you'd need to anneal them as you bend them to prevent brittleness.

Snaff,
OK thanks; clear about annealing to bend.
Do you suggest leaving "the pointy end" as un-annealed as possible to retain hardness ??
Or would it tend to shatter if hitting rocks ?
P.S.
I saw an idea this morning to use star washers as the guyline retainer -- rather than bend a crook.

Star washers is a good idea.

Annealing is not really a DIY/home process as it needs to be very controlled and preferably done in a vacuum, although this is only tent pegs and not the space shuttle so it may be possible with a blow torch. I assume it would be cheaper to buy stock bar rather than welding rods, is there a reason you thought of welding rods.

Snaff,
Again thanks.
Welding rods because I found them for sale significantly cheaper than pieces of bar/rod.
It was only the welding rod price that made it possibly viable.
I guess the seller has a source !

I googled annealing titanium and got the sophisticated vacuum/heating soaking/cooling top of the pile but there were a couple of "heat it red and slow cool" observations.
As you say it ain't for an aircraft frame and given the no bend star washer option I might just give that a go.
Thanks again.
