Quote of the day

‘In the autumn there will be a second wave. Sweden will have a high level of immunity and the number of cases will probably be quite low. But Finland will have a very low level of immunity. Will Finland have to go into a complete lockdown again?’

Anders Tegnell, Sweden’s state epidemiologist, speaking to the FT.

then what is the country going to do folks .....

In the case of the UK we will have the facilities and equipment in place to help stop the NHS being overwhelmed, hopefully the World will have a better understanding of how to fight the virus using existing drugs and there should be a more experienced based plan to contain it rather than a media/political driven knee-jerk reaction.

would like to thinks so, but we are hoping for a big simple answer like an inoculation like the flu jab that hasn't eradicated the flu. They have not eradicated Mers or Sars. This is a virus and is already mutating

I agree Spud, Measles has been steadily rising over the last couple of years due to the vaccinations not being taken up. Despite all the research many in the World are not interested in a preventative approach they just want a quick pill if/when they need it.
My personal thoughts on a second wave are that the danger isn't in a mutation of the virus, the real problem lies with people who 'think' they have had Covid (but not hospitalized) start to relax their own social distancing and other preventative measures to the extent that they then catch full on Covid or become a carrier to infect others. Meaningful testing (not media appeasement) and tracking is needed long before a vaccine.

The fact is that vastly more people in areas of poverty in the UK have died from Covid than in more affluent areas. It is fairly obvious really, if you live in overcrowded areas and have poor health you are more likely to catch Covid or other similar diseases and more likely to die from them.
The data here which is printed in the Guardian, but comes from Public Health England, makes salutary reading.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... ardest-hit
I am not sure where you get your information about deaths in Africa and India from but I think all we have seen is the tip of the iceberg there. The WHO yesterday predicted there could be 190,000 deaths in Africa this year.
Whilst the Tories systematic running down of public services under the guise of austerity (funny how Boris found the magic money forest just before the last election) did not cause Covid it certainly contributed to its negative impact. The failure to heed the advice of 2016 report, which other countries acted on, is almost criminally negligent. If you have the time to read some other countries’ news you will find the a lot of them are extremely critical of the UK government’s response, particularly given that we had seen what was happening in Italy in time to be better prepared.
Cheers Jak
Cheers for the reply jak........2nd attempt to reply

why would anyone be of poor health just because they live in so called poverty ? Poverty a term which is very relative in this country, I come from the "worse" estate in Wolverhampton my mother would pawn my father suit mid week so we could eat, I don't remember many of my cohorts being unhealthy hungry yes but not necessary of Ill health. Over crowded housing yes but very often by choice more kids more social.

190k deaths in africa is that a typo ? does not seem a lot compared to our 30k plus ? and the WHO giving out those figures an organisation who has admitted along with the eu in doctoring their reports after pressure from the Chinese hmmmm. If poverty was such a contributing factor surely the death toll in Africa would a lot higher and geldof would of organised a concert by now

Oh AUSTERITY I love that word when it is thrown around by the left, some would called it book keeping. Not spending what you do not have and leaving future generations to pay for our nice lifestsyle, point in case my mother pawning the suit, she would use the money to buy food and then when pay day came she would use the money to buy the suit back so my dad didn't have to go to church on sunday in his work clothes. No matter how much I explained she would be better off in the long run not pawning the suit she never ever got it.

Boris didn't find a magic money tree neither would of Corbyn it is debt that we as tax payer will have to deal with and leave to the future generations to clear. This debt will effect the NHS in the future as well as many other things. Will the NHS actually survive this as the country spirals into a depression caused by lock down. Remember every debt has to e serviced the more you have to pay back in interest etc the disposable income you have available to spend elsewhere simples really

I am still intrigued by Prof Cockswole Lockdown insistence that he thought he was immune.

cheers Spud ;)

I am still intrigued by Prof Cockswole Lockdown's statement saying he thought is was immune. Now as one of the governments leading authorities on this thing you would of thought he would know if immunity was a real possibility and if so why are we not chasing "herd immunity" . If the immune thing was a lie how on earth can anything else that he has said be trusted and on the strength of these's issues we are sending the country in to a depression.

Covid 19 is not going away it is here like the common cold, flu, mers and sars. None of which has been eradicated no matter what any specialist in "Math" say's about his "R" figure

The trouble for a lot of people I talk to is that they have been bombarded in the press and tv stating so many symptoms and they are confused and to a certain extent given up. Just read a message of a mate of mine who has been unwell and then fine over a period of time he was then diagnosed with angina and he argued about as he was not getting any issues whilst exercising they now have stated he has covid and is worried now by the amount of time it seems to have gone and come back (probably never went) Interesting times ahead

take care mate

REMEMBER PEOPLE 98.5% OF PEOPLE ARE SURVIVING COVID

Hi Spud,
I would agree that in theory being poor does not make you poorly, however the statistics certainly prove that poor people in this country die younger and spend more of their lives in states of ill health. Some of that you could put down to ‘lifestyle choices’ such as smoking etc. In this country a lot is linked to where you live. Poorer people tend to live in inner cities which are heavily polluted, they also quite often live in overcrowded and substandard accommodation. There is nothing new about the links between poverty and ill health. PE, or physical training as it was then, was introduced into state schools at the time of the Boer War, because so many of the recruits were in such poor physical state. If you look at records from the Victorian era, when they have measured the heights of bodies, the poor on average are significantly shorter than the rich. In this country junk food tends to either be cheaper or easier to cook quickly. At the time I was poorest I made the decIsion to stop eating meat as it saved me money. Education has a huge part to play as the poor tend to have lower standards of education than the rich. As a country the divide in the UK between rich and poor is far greater than many of our neighbours and has increased significantly in the last ten years. The reduction of social housing and the abolition of the fair rent scheme have contributed to this.
‘Austerity’, whatever the original definition of the word, has come in this country to mean the deliberate and systematic re-education in public services. This was a choice by the Tories, they could have chosen to raise taxes, they could have chosen to close loop holes like our off shore tax havens (one of the main reasons so many millionaires supported Brexit, they were worried that EU legislation would close these). We are supposed to be one of the richest countries in the world yet our public services are in a dire state. When I meet people from other countries or expats who have been away for a while they are genuinely shocked at the state the UK is in.
As for Africa I hope the WHO and the many charities working out there have got it wrong, but I expect you are right ‘St Bob’ and other millionaire rock stars will soon be asking us to donate money to buy some dreary tune. Incidentally I always look back on Live Aid with fond memories as I was at the Kent show at the time throughly enjoying myself and was convinced to join MAG that day, which led to a lot of friends and fun in the following years.
Whilst you and I may never agree about certain issues, in the absence of being able to go to a real pub it is great to have the opportunity to have these debates here.
Thanks Jak
