this helps although it does not show how much oil is used or what weight, i assume you replace same amount that comes out

Yes another way if your unsure of the amount is to lift the front of the bike so theres no weight on it [forks fully extended] then take the cap off the fork. You can then use a piece of wire to enable measurement of the height of the Oil in the tube to the tube tip.

Eack leg may be different and if you disasemble the legs you will need to gently pump them on refilling to get the Oil to settle removing any air pockets, before confirming correct Oil height.

Thanks Andi, i spoke to Neill at WK yesterday to see if they had the oil spec for the WK 400 but alas they said no. When i get round to it it will be trial and error i guess, the video shows taking the forks off and inverting to pour the oil out from the top which seems straightforward, i will capture the oil per fork to see whats in them and mirror that volume. the only thing i will need to guess is oil weight, the norm with modern forks seems to be 5w and i understand how the different weights affect the rebound or fork stiffness its just knowing where to start and how much oil to buy, my guess is 1L should be enough for both forks

Just checked the DRZ400 manual which is a similar size bike and fork oil is listed as SS-05 [5w] and 710cc per leg and I guess 7.5w would be a stiffer ride should you want it.

Strange the service centre doesnt know the spec how do they service the forks?

Thanks Netsonic and Bojer - and sorry to interrupt the fork discussion
No - I didn't get a tool kit with the bike :-( maybe the dealer can help?
WRT to the smoke, if it was water cooled I would be convinced it had a head gasket leak - plumbs of white smoke - but its not. The smoke is definitely white and smells of oil. The bike seems to run clean at higher revs, but once idling for a few moments it starts gently smoking and gets worse. I did try putting paper in the gas flow as suggested - a few fine spots of oil but nothing serious.
Also the clear breather pipe keeps filling with a clear, tasteless fluid - presuming water. Even after a 20 minute run I'm getting 5-10mm of fluid in that pipe.
I want to try and get the bike 100% as I'm going to investigate doing my IAM bike test, and I want to trusty bike underneath me.

thanks Andi, did some digging and found an old XR400 manual, not the same but gives me a guide and approach

interestingly it also says fork capacity 18.9 US oz, i make that about 559 ml, assuming the xr forks have a longer travel, we should be below 500ml per fork on the WK....not sure if it works that way but will find out when i do the oil change

Hi Phil, im sure im stating the obvious and apologies if i am but just checking when you did the oil change you drained the oil from both drain plugs, frame and sump. Interestingly the water separator breather on mine would always have a fare bit of water in it through the cold winter days due to the difference in engine and air temp causing condensation, since we hit the summer unless i do an early run with the morning dew i get virtually none, so odd if on a hot day you still get some...........just a thought

Hi netsonic, thanks for your reply, yes I did drain the frame and the engine sump (by gear change). I also removed the gauze filter at the bottom of the frame, so I'm really not sure where all this water is coming from!
I think I'm going the bite the bullet and change the rings.
