Riding in Portugal

Looking for advice on good roads and trails in central and northern Portugal. Anyone been there?

Hi ,

I live in central Portugal, there are great roads virtually everywhere, just head for the hills and you won't be disappointed. Trails are absolutely everywhere as they are needed for firefighters to fight wild fires in the summer. Some are easy and some not so easy, I trail ride most weeks and rarely see a soul when I'm out, wherever you a see a trail (unless it says otherwise) you can ride it. Hope this helps. B)

Agreed. Hard to find poor roads. If you plan on using the motorway to get around it's worth getting a bit of credit for their toll system. It's a right pain trying to pay later... If you can be bothered.

Just don't bother. I asked them when I was there with the bike 2 years ago and they told me if you don't pay there, they'll send you the bill home, no extra charge. Note that has been 2 years and never received anything. (thumbs)

I've never been charged for using the Portuguese toll roads.
As I have Portuguese NIF & I spend enough time there I might setup a via verde account https://www.viaverde.pt ......... one day
Btw A Bip & Drive toll tag will cover you for several countries inc Spain, France. Italy and Portugal

Excellent trails everywhere No Moaning walkers only got bothered by a few packs of dogs chasing you and there big enough to eat you if they get you off the bike

The sheep dogs can certainly make you focus!
It's a great place to ride it seems to have a bit of everything. Early June seemed a nice time of year to go.
Wikiloc has lots of routes,just set the filters to what you want .

I'm thinking of going again this year with the family in a 4x4 and doing a few gentle lanes.

Thanks to everyone who posted. I have bought a house north of Tomar and will be riding one my bikes over to it in June. If anyone wants a bed sometime in the summer just let me know!

Your probably only 80km+ South of Gois where one of the main Portuguese biker rallies is held August 17/18/19/20. I'm usually found around Setubal / Sesimbra when I visit family and friends
