Ideas and comments on a 650 to 1000 cc touring bike.

Post by Schoe000 »

Hi just after ideas and comments about getting a touring road bike. It would not be used for off road at all; I have a Husky 630 and a 250 freeride for that.

Considerations
I am a mega short ass
Want some sort of weather protection
650 to 1000cc
Panniers to carry camping gear
No pillion needed
Prefer lowdown weight and physically smaller bikes
Cruse at 70 to 75
Budget 3-4k

Bike I have considered are the 650 Versys and the 650 V-Strom. Both would need a lowering link but these are easily available and easy to fit.

What do you thing and what have you for sale?

Aquired taste but Guzzi Breva works very well as a reliable / solid tourer at the budget you mention. My mate needs lowering links for a v strom but not the guzzi. 1100 is better. 750 is a bit underpowered for its weight.

Hi there;

Plenty of choice, id say you'd need at least a 600cc for touring/luggage and a bit of grunt/torque, something like a Suzuki V-Strom DL650 (GT has standard 3box luggage) would be brilliant, I've the bigger DL1000 and love it as it does everything well.

You can pick up an early 2003/4 model DL1000 for little money, I'm biased, sorry.

The 650 Versys would also be excellent for your needs. Try find a local motorcycle dealer who maybe has these bikes (and others) and go test-ride them as see what suits you!

Regards;
Peter

If it doesn't have to do any off-road work you could probably find a road only bike for less money than a fashionable adventure bike.I just looked on eBay at ER6f's out of interest and there's a two year old bike with 1400 miles for £4300.

I spotted a clean FZ6 Yamaha on Gumtree yesterday for sale at a shade over 1k, a perfect bike for touring. Reliable machine with enough grunt for Europe stuff.

650 vstrom would do the job nice, no need for 1000. But i might just be biased as my 04 with 54000 on the clock gets me anywhere i need to go. ;)

Have you thought about the Honda CB500x?

Physically it's fairly low, and could be lowered further i'm sure, the engine is very economical, I've been returning an average of 82mpg over the last 1000 miles. It's got a nice ride position, and most come complete with Hondas side and rear panniers/ cases. It'll easily cruise at 70mph with plenty available for overtakes.
Price wise I've seen good low mileage examples of only a couple of years old for less that 4K

Maybe worth considering.....

There's an er6n for sale on this forum I believe. Almost new and low mileage. Can't remember who was selling it!
