KTM 950,990,1050 or 1190 ?

Post by Stewie »

Hi all, just a question for all those KTM owners out there, I'm looking to get a big trail bike and have my sights set on a big KTM, so no need for the 'why don't you get a 800cc ect' comments.
The question is which one of the big KTM's is the best for off-road/trail and why, I'm not bothered about the residual value if/when I drop it. (thumbs)

950-990!! Because they are Dakar pedigree legends, not lanky sports bikes or weird inbetweeners. ;)

Certainly not an 1190S

They're lovely bikes to ride but as far as I'm concerned they're too heavy for mud and the smaller front wheel would make tyre choices a bit tricky to put it mildly.

I used to own a 990 and was not afraid to take it places some enduro bikes wouldn't. Super capable big bike. I've recently spoke to someone who owned 990r, he now owns 1190r and claims it's better off road. If I was in the market for a new one I'd buy 1190 r must be the r version thou

Also what's the main difference in the 990 and the 990r suspension travel, how many people that take their 990's off-road are bottoming out their suspention ?

I think 950s had 50mm travel more over 950. 990r had 25mm over 990. 1190r and s don't know

I have a standard hight 950 and I have never noticed the suspension bottoming out offroad. Being able to get my feet flat on the floor has saved me from toppling over a few times.

950 best bike.
Naturally aspirated
Took a while to get suspension set how I want but since have never bottomed it out.
Got the standard height and having 30in inside leg struggled a few times and had a few silly drops. But get more used to it.
Good luck on finding one as they are keepers.
Check out KTM forum
Orange crush on ADV
KTM 950 info.
Try get one that has all the problems sorted.
