I would save paint, ditch broken white lines and where there were double solid white lines for no crossing the line, it would be a single one.

I believe scrapping central white lines outside built up areas is a bad idea.

but there are many places where safe overtaking is permitted but you'd stop that , depending which way the bends open up

Some places in Holland have no road markings,
No pavements and no traffic control.
No demarcation at all.
End result slower traffic speeds.
Less accidents.
Couldn't see it working here though as we just have too many people.?.....

Holland has a denser population than we have. In fact the idea relies on a large number of pedestrians to act as mobile traffic calmers. Some town centres over here where there is part time pedestrianisation have a similar set up which works when the traffic is let in. In Falmouth the main shopping street has no road markings and the pavement is only marked by different colour cobbles so people spill out into the road. It works very well but doesn't stop people lobbying for it to be pedestrianised.

I can't see it working too well on country roads, everyone will just go faster and use the whole road. Until they meet some one head on.

A few years ago the coast road between Bridport and Weymouth was resurfaced - some clown in the local highways dept thought it would be a good idea not to paint the white lines at the edge of the road. Their decision to do this was based on something similar that was done in The Netherlands - trouble is that the coast road frequently gets very very foggy and visibility can be down to 20 metres or less unlike the road in The Netherlands!!

Eventually after many complaints and crashes the white lines were reinstated.

Interestingly, the IAM posted about the white line removal on Facebook last week and I replied with the same story above. It was a complete farce, I came back along that road one night in the dark and fog and it was one of the worst nights of my life, I was terrified by the time I got to Weymouth and I know that road like the back of my hand.

I think the dutch scheme, its called 'Shared Space', is a brilliant idea. Anything to make people take notice of what they are doing whilst driving can only be a good thing for us bikers.
