central white lines

Post by catcitrus »

Is it April 1st?

I'm old (and remember simple dotted lines)and agree that the proliferation of double or single continuous white lines puts people to sleep--but this looks like a recipe for head ons!

Highway chiefs now believe that blank roads are more effective - as they introduce an element of uncertainty which prompts motorists to take a more cautious approach to driving.

this is true to an extent- but I have only ever seen it used in urban '30' areas where there was typically a mass of road sign clutter, paint on roads etc which causes driver sense overload as you are being bombarded with information.

I think they rolled it out in lots of towns in the Netherlands ?

out on the 'open' road at national limits ????

Madness if this is introduced on the "open road".
When it's foggy the white line is the only guide to the way the road goes.

Mind you, no one sticks to their "side" anyway. The number of folk who cut across a right hand bend is startling.

Hi Calcitrus,
Is it my eyes or do you have a picture of a woman in a knee length dress strung up from a tree branch, as your avatar?

Many drivers are already ignoring the white lines anyway , driving in the middle of the road , cutting the corners and taking two lanes before the roundabout :(

Its a hanging witch on a broomstick by a cafe on the North Devon coast--just a nice picture commensurate with my beliefs. ;)

A few years ago the coast road between Bridport and Weymouth was resurfaced - some clown in the local highways dept thought it would be a good idea not to paint the white lines at the edge of the road. Their decision to do this was based on something similar that was done in The Netherlands - trouble is that the coast road frequently gets very very foggy and visibility can be down to 20 metres or less unlike the road in The Netherlands!!

Eventually after many complaints and crashes the white lines were reinstated.

You believe in hanging witches? Hmm, too far off topic, never mind.
I believe scrapping central white lines outside built up areas is a bad idea.
