Buy a Japanese sports bike, put it in your garage and use it 5 months of the year and then only on sunny Sundays.
After three years it's done 3000 miles.
When you factor in the fact that they are actually very well made, it's no wonder they don't breakdown.

I think SteveW has hit the nail firmly on the head. This list would be more interesting if it showed the breakdowns / 1000 miles.

My BMWs have had their moments but they've all covered 15-20,000 miles a year all year round.

SteveW would be onto something if Japan only made sports bikes...only slight issue is they don't lol. Also plenty of BMW,s sitting in garages most of the year and then only down to Starbucks during the summer.
I have 3 yamahas.....none are sport bikes, none have been to the garage for repairs and I do over 20,000 miles a year.

Most times if something minor goes wrong with my bikes and I can fix it then I do it. I don't need to go back to the dealer if a screw falls out of the fairing on my bike but some riders do and that's logged as time in for a repair.

Too many people are buying bikes but don't have either the skills, the time, the tools or the interest to repair even minor niggles so it's back to the dealer with the idea that they'll try their hardest to persuade the dealer to put it through as a warranty claim.

How true.
Customer of mine had his nice new K1600GT on his drive when I called the other day.
I asked if he was off for a ride. But no, he was taking it to the dealership to have his tyre pressures checked as it has a TPMS system and it's best to let them do it!
He explained that it's easy to break a valve when trying on a garage forecourt, this was from experience.

Maybe the complication of modern bikes scare people into these actions?

this is true a friend who has been a mechanic for years recently bought an Audi(car) and now takes it in to a specialist for repair.

With most modern bikes it's a sensor that fails so the trick is to buy the plug in diagnostic tool, find out which sensor has turned its toes up and replace it. When you sell the bike put the diagnostic tool on eBay and get back 75% of what you paid (thumbs)

I've got the plug in for my Tenere and have never used it but they're £75 and I'm pretty confident that if I advertised it on here there'd be plenty of takers.

I suspect most manufacturers are the same and with Ducati you don't pay for software upgrades so when they find something that improves the performance (or fuel consumption) they let you know and you either have it done when the bike goes in for a service or go to your local dealer who you bought the bike from and have a good relationship with and they do it free of charge. Obviously this fails if you bought the bike 100 miles away to save a few quid on the price but that's just bad luck

I also have a KLR 650 76K on the clock last turned off in 2009. Started first stab of the button 3 weeks ago with the same fuel from 2009. In 76K the only thing that went wrong was the side stand switch.
My mates F800GS wouldn't start cos it had dropped 1.5 Volts.

I know what bike my money is going on.
