It is a big deal if your bike is older than 2007. What are you supposed to do, go out and buy a newer bike? This started out as a congestion charge, now it is a catch all emissions charge. Just another rip off.

How can they apply emissions to bikes when they arent tested by manufqcturers otherwise wed have low tax bands...

Our camper is banned as only euro 4 compliant but the lorry is compliant at 80k ...the reason for bad air quality is congestion fair and square...too many buses and taxis ..

I am all up for it to reduce traffic in city centres. When you travel to heavily poluted cities, you then notice the health benefits and quality of life being able to walk in smog free streets (thumbs)

On the other hand, Boris is the biggest chicken in UK. Implement transition period for cabbies to switch to euro 5 emission standards and the emissions will be reduced dramatically. But there will be huge disrptions due to selfishly cabbies blocking all the roads no matter how long the transition period is :unsure:

It is a big deal for achieving clean air in city centres as well.

Bike only make a very small contribution to pollution, so making bikes more efficient or forcing older bikes out of central London altogether will have a negligible effect on reducing pollution levels.

And those negligible benefits have to be set against the effects that reducing the number of bikes will have on congestion. A few years ago it was announced that allowing bikes to use (most) bus lanes in London would be kept permanently because it had been proved that bikes reduced congestion. Every bike in London makes every other vehicle a little bit more efficient because they spend less time in traffic jams, less time looking for a parking place, etc, etc

Discouraging people from using bikes won't stop those people going into London - it will just force them to use other transport.

So, negligible benefits from discouraging older bike use, but significant detriments from the impact on congestion and making other vehicles less efficient.

Well, thats the sort of Tory response I expected from you. unfortunately, not everyone has the amount of money that you have, so will that be the end of classic bikes? why do you think people ride bikes that are around the 13 year old mark? well 'billy big bucks'? Its because they can't afford anything newer.
