Most Booking Sites charge property owners a commission and this can be reflected in the difference in the rate between Online and booking direct.

Handy App when traveling is www.bestbikingroads.com.

what phone(s) do you guys use?

am looking to get a smartphone but the iphone 3GS I've been offered for free won't use any Apple OS higher than 6.1.6 and so can't use the GoPro or Facebook apps so that's a dead end

I have Samsung Galaxy S4, had the S3 before. Great phones.
The S5 is also waterproof.

S4 user here. As mentioned the S5 is waterproof.

You'll find problems with the older Apple iphones the 3 as you say doesn't use the latest OS and apps are slowly stopping working on them.

Cheap second hand options...
HTC sensation, htc one, Galaxy s3.

Have a look at the windows phones John, you can get some good deals. I'm not sure about the app situation though.

I use Viewranger all the time, walking, trail riding and just normal road riding.
My wife has Tripadvisor to check for eateries local to where we're stopping, found us a cracking restaurant in the black forest in May just up the road from the campsite.

The windows phones are great but there isn't the same range of apps...yet.

I don't think viewranger is available or memormap. Gopro is now available but you need to make sure its a windows phone 8.

If you do use a windows phone check out NaviComputer as an offline mapping app.
