1st Camping Trip - Check List

Take some midge repellent, the bastards will eat you alive if the weathers right. There is one that is very effective but cant remember its name, as its not actually a repellent, its a sort of moisturiser I think. I'm sure someone will tell me what it is

I've never been moved to share my anorak list before but for those who struggle getting to sleep I'm posting my check list of what I take when I go away. Strangely over the years as we've moved from Hostelling to camping and all the extra kit involved to keep the weight down the biggest sacrifice has been clothes ! My first ever trip had a fresh set of clothes for each day.
It is a very long list. I've recently got a topbox (old age) actually it was dirt cheap. What goes in the box used to live in a 35l rucksack.

I'm actually in Scotland, in Musselburgh (Nr Edinburgh), so Fort William is actually only a 300 mile round trip for me.

We are heading to Applecross. If the weather is shocking we will pull up short at Fort William.

Today I loaded up my camping & cooking equipment onto the 125, I plan to put another rok strap under the seat as the x 2 I have are a little high up using the rack.



I'm thinking I could maybe get a wee chair like you suggest Elle? to sit on top maybe?

Only took it for a short spin, as my speedo is being repaired, and didnt have any issues (thumbs).

The panniers have arrived and I will hopefully have them fitted tomorrow.

I marked in bold what I bring and that was a great checklist. I made one up years ago for camping then found it easier to keep a full set of camping gear packed away so its always ready.

I buy food when I get there but bring the tea etc etc.

Also, please take a few empty plastic bags to dispose of your rubbish, as there is nothing worse than locating an excellent wild camping site, only to find it littered with beer cans/bottles, food wrappers etc etc. Try and leave it as nature intended for the next responsible visitor (thumbs)

Last September in a wee camping spot at the side of one of the Lochs in Scotland, the previous occupiers left it like a real 'Shit Hole' Lots of empty beer containers etc and even the remains of a proper cheap BBQ which they had tried to burn on their campfire

On that point, take a 'Fire Log' or two, an excellent aid to getting a campfire going. Nothing better than a campfire with a few beers if the weather allows

Heff - thank you (thumbs) I didn't consider midges, will pick up something today - had to chuckle at Avon Skin So Soft, but whatever works!

I'll be on a camp site on this occasion - I'm not quite ready for the world of solo wild camping. But as a mature responsible adult I would be more inclined to leave it tidier than when I arrived (thumbs)

I think I might need a bigger bike.. :laugh: but there are a fair few things on it I hadn't even considered which I will need to take.

Avon skin so soft doesn't work for everybody, certainly doesn't for me, I use Boots tropical insect repellant spray which is 50% deet.

Ralph is right skin so soft is no good at fending off a major midge attack i live with the wee devils up west and i use lifesystems 100+ you can stand in a swarm all day without a bite. Spray it onto your hands and wipe over any exposed skin and your hair, be careful not to get on eyes, lips,or motorbike plastic or paint as it melts plastic and paint, wash hands after applying.There is no midges up west at the moment to early you should be safe for a month or so cheers Ian.
