Do you think it is primal ?

Post by gibbo1974 »

I've come to the conclusion that I love riding bikes because for thousands of years man has domesticated the horse and it's kind of built into our DNA over generations that throwing your leg over a saddle and then traveling is the right thing to do.

I can be travelling in the middle of nowhere with no agenda in a car and I don't feel that sense of freedom and connection that I do when I'm on the bike doing the same thing.

I love my cars, I polish them and maintain them but I become attached to the bike in a way I never have with a car, I've never patted a car after a long journey and I don't get that feeling of "an old friend" that I do with a bike.

Is it just that I like bikes more than cars or is there something buried deep in my DNA that is accepting the bike on a different level.

Hmmmmmmmmm, the things you think about a?!

Completely agree....went without a bike for a few years and felt utterly miserable without one. Within 10 months of getting one, there are now four in my garage!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

What you describe is actually the early signs of insanity :woohoo:

Seriously though, I know what you mean about the affinity with the Bike as apposed to the Car. I think we feel more vulnerable & less cocooned on a Bike which in turn makes us feel more dependent on it. The Bike is our trusty steed which takes us to distant places then hopefully back again. We then show our love (cue Barry White music) by patting them I talking to them like a Budgie talks to its mirror (thumbs)
That said, not all Bikes command such love & devotion. A Bikes character can also play a major part in how we feel about them & I personally cannot gel with many modern Bikes or multis great as they all are. I prefer a more tactile beast in the form of a big single.

I always thank my Bike for getting me home from a long trip & give it a pat on the tank when nobody is looking.

Time for my medication again !

I think you're on to something. I'd also add paddling a canoe and using a bow and arrow to a list of primal connections to technology.

There is something deeply satisfying about the fusion of muscle, skill, pysical forces and crafted machinery in all three disciplines.

The only thing getting in the way for me is my lacklustre skills!

I totally feel the same as the op, I've only been riding big bikes for the past five years, had lambrettas before and field bikes as a kid, always had an interest in bikes but not the right time I guess.

I had a big interest in cars, but never felt anything like the connection I do with bikes, you are almost a passenger in a car when driving as its not involving, on a bike every minor thing requires input from you, there is a big margin for error and to get hurt, it keeps you focused.

I would never feel excited about a road trip by car (unless it was in a gt car I couldn't afford), but I've planned a trip for next June and can't wait for it.

Totally agree, its the ultimate connection of man and machine nothing else gives the same buzz

Ive never been into cars (unless its a 130 landrover) being on a bike and open to the elements and risks gives that feeling that you are actually alive and not just living

+1
Really no interest in cars, never had. I like them to have space in the boot for all the crud I like to have near me(a friend always described them as a survival cars!}
I guess it makes up for the polar opposite relative amount of space on the bike, I'm also a fan of my recurve and flat bow (and things that are sharp or get hot lol)

Modern cars I agree have no character and you cannot bond with them but my 1972 camper (Judy) has a place in my heart equal to my bike. Probably because I have rebuilt her myself and know every nut and bolt, and have literally shed blood for her. She gets loads of encouragement at every hill we come to and a thanking slap on the dash at the top.
