Giant Loop Luggage

Post by royle100 »

Anyone had experience with these? Looking to fit to XT 660 Z Tenere for 2 - 5 day off road trip.

The Ortlieb seem good and few hundred quid cheaper (but may require rack to keep off exhaust - aftermarket LeoVince)

Guess could always go with cheap and cheerful army surplus! ;)

I rather like the look of the third (eBay) option. Those panniers definitely suit the retro look that is just so ‘in’ this season. Just remember to stay in theme & accessorise them with a pair of bin bags as liners. Another option is to wrap cling film around the outside & secure with duct tape. That is also quite a cheap waterproofing option. Don’t ask me how I know this…

I haven't used the Giant Loop stuff personally being a tight wad but several of my mates have and still do use them on a range of bikes including an ancient XR600, KTM SUper Enduro 950 and the smaller 690 enduro. They swear by them but I seem to remember that in torrential rain they were not 100% waterproof but they do fasten really well.

Just a word of warning though, they don't like hot exhausts as one of the boys found out on the way to Italy last year

I've just adapted/altered two pairs of French ex-army rucsacs for a little over £50. Velcro on the shoulder straps so that as a pair they can be slung over the back of our bikes and the frames we already have should keep them off the exhaust. Not used them in anger yet. The boil rally will be the first time.
After Morocco we decided we had to keep the weight down and the alloy boxes weight almost 11kg a pair. Even the Ortlieb bags which are about the cheapest for good soft bags cost too much for us at the moment. So Following Austin Vince's example we are trying the adapted army surplus and see how it goes.

Never enough time and so much to see and experience.

Previously a VStrom 650, and a KTM SMR 950, currently XT600E with many mods. And now a F800GS Trophy since the KTM has gone.
