Sorry to say that there were many more before Jupiters Travels .
'Original' was perhaps not the right term but, for me, Ted Simon entirely justified why you should travel around the world by motorcycle even, as he admits, you're not a biker to the core. And he writes very well about his experiences. These days the RTW thing seems to be a very big bandwagon with lots of people jumping on, not just participants but expedition outfits, adventure equipment suppliers, magazines etc.. It won't be long before the road of bones is gridlocked with motorcycle travellers and their support crews.

The AV article was the first thing I read when got my copy of ABR,I did wonder how much stick AV would get, but I never expected the 'discussion' to polarize so markedly. I've met many of the people named, and I'm sure they would all help anyone at anytime regardless of what bike they ride or kit they use because to a man/woman they care about other PTW (Powered Two Wheelers) users and not the bike they are riding.
AV expressed his opinion, borne out of his experience, and we ought to be grown up enough to accept that opinion even if it doesn't align with our own (actually, I have a lot of sympathy with AVs opinion about the corporate kidnapping of travel riding, I am beginning to hate the term 'adventure' but maybe I'm being sensitive).
AV is passionate with a huge P about encouraging people to follow their dream and do 'that' trip and not get dictated too by the marketing gurus saying that you must ride this and wear that and use this... Sure, we all rely on personal recommendation to aid our choices, but listen to those who have done it, or used it, or been there - you would be daft not to.
Anyway, enough of my two penneths worth. I respect all those that get out there and experience travel on two wheels, whether for a day/weekend/week/month/year. I respect AV for the sacrifice he and Lois have made encouraging others (see the efforts that go into hosting the Adventure Travel Film Festival). I respect everyone who has raised the profile of motorcycle touring/adventuring.
God bless us all.
Now stop fighting and play nicely.

If you're doing it for yourself then yes B)

I've met Austin and heard his talks. Initially I thought he had a massive chip on his shoulder about LWR but if you stand back you can see it makes for an entertaining evening and the guy is turning a shilling whilst doing what he enjoys. It's just another aspect of the media circus and no need to start turning tables over it.

To me the important thing is that LWR/Mondo enduro plus many other ride reports/books/vids give me the inspiration to go out and do my own adventure B)
I think he's embarrassing himself a little to be honest, I would've expected him to rise above it and be the bigger man, be proud of Mondo rather than slating all the other efforts, as for entertaining, I've spent an evening with Nick Sanders, now he is witty and entertaining and more importantly ....... Humble.

This is all a bit faulty towers now.

Don't mention the war...or touratech...I did it once but I think I got away with it.

I understand your analogy. But...

...might take a while for gridlock... B) unless you count the jam caused by flooding/landslides/a cyclone this summer. This year nobody rode the Old Summer Road and less than 10 managed the New Federal Road version of the Road Of Bones. Of these, 3 were Brits who rode West>East. 2 even rode back again East>West. The other bloke freighted his rebadged Aprilia on a ship out of Magadan :silly:

Sorry Mike..... I'll take myself away and have a word with myself, wasn't aware that if the Gods of the forum had spoken then nobody else was allowed an opinion.... we'll end up like the GS forum if we're not careful.

Tongue in cheek... before anybody blows a gasket, I couldn't live with the guilt !

Depends on if he is extracting money from you... Sanders that is... my opinion of him as someone who mistook me for a "minion" at an event was of an arrogant self important prick... c'est la vie.

Chris Scott , is the most straight forward and modest blokes you will ever meet. Even his website for the Adventure Motorcycling Handbook has the following quote "‘Adventure motorcycling’ (a term I’m credited with coining in the 90s)", not in a bragging way but as self effacing mockery because Austin Vince and Ewan and Thingy both state that his book is a must read for all budding adventurers .

Now given the amount of time he has spent travelling in the Sahara and funding his next trips by working in a book shop and selling books and DVD's after 3 decades of riding in far off places with unsuitable machinery and very little publicity surely his opinion should count a lot higher than the one trip every few years brigade, so how about a similar CS interview ;)
Gaffer tape is The Force! It has a light side and a dark side and holds the Universe together!

Well I picked up 'Days that must happen to you' by Dan Walsh in the local library yesterday. He's another one who can be quite, shall we say 'outspoken', but at first flick through it looked funny, I'll see when I start reading it.
