CORROSION PROTECTION SPRAY

Post by Benhur »

HI ALL,

looking for advice here...

I know about ACF-50. have used their spray. I have seen on the net, their corrosion block grease. i also have access to wurth corrosion protection spray and WD-40 spray.

Can you give me your collective wisdom on which is the best to protect against corrosion. My bikes are a

transalp which is used for light offroading and trail riding in mostly dry weather. (too lazy to clean off mud after a ride :))

FJR1300 which is used for touring and roads in general

Both bikes are well cared for and garaged. I do live within 10 minutes of the sea (all Malta and Gozo is that far from the sea :))

which corrosion protection spray would you use during routine maintainance and cleaning as prevention?

thanks guys

i use ACF50 spray on the bike and ACF50 grease on the spokes. its all expensive stuff but if your bikes your passion then its a small price to pay to keep it tip top. ive used the scottoiler FS365 spray but doesnt seem to last like ACF50. my only complaint is that all the dirt and dust sticks to the acf50 so you can clean your bike, spray it with acf and then 1 ride in the dry and it looks dirty again

ACF50, ACF50 & ACF50 ;) as said before dirt and dust stick but it doesn`t corrode and I don`t find it that expensive, a £13 aerosol last`s me a year (12,000 miles) and I have now bought the pump spray which works out cheaper.

if dirt is sticking to your acf you are putting too much on!!

I spray on a cloth and wipe over and have no dirt sticking

+1 for ACF50

Used it for years, used to own a Suzuki Intruder (let the ridicule begin) and spent more time cleaning it than riding it. Sprayed it with ACF50 and left it, kept it in tip top condition. When I traded it in, the dealer commented on the fact it had been protected with ACF50 and what good condition it was in.

Use it now about every 6 months, spray it over the engine, wipe it over with a cloth then wipe most of metal bits of the bike with the same cloth. Great stuff.

ACF50. I even use it on my chain - keeps it clean and protected against rust.

Hi all

my 2 cents about the two options mentioned in here: ACF50 and Scottoiler FS365.

They are both great corrosion protectors but used in a different way and with different intentions:

ACF50 is an oil-based permanent protector. You spray it on and it creates a barrier between the bike and the environment. Before you spray it make sure every surface is spotless... because otherwise you trap the salt in and it might make it worse rather than better. The problem with ACF50 is that a) it's really expensive and b) you don't know when it will wear off... some time between 3 - 6 months I would reckon. Watch out for places where you might rub it off with your boots, trousers, etc. Like it has been said in here already: Because it's oil-based it is very sticky, dirt can easily stick to it but at least you know that your bike is protected.

Scottoiler FS365 is a spray on solution and very much different to ACF50. It's a water-based corrosion protector and it's meant to be re-applied everytime you use the bike (365 days a year). Instead of creating a barrier FS365 uses a chemical reaction to bring the acid level of salt back down to neutral + includes corrosion inhibitors and other magical things. The idea is this: You come home from work or a long day riding and you are wet and its dark... the only thing you want to do is go inside and have a hot cup of tea/cold beer/hot bath/cold beer again. You don't want to clean your bike. So you come home and you just spray FS 365 ON TOP of all the dirt and salt and it will protect your bike (that's how I use it).
On the weekend: Clean your bike and re-apply FS365 to the still wet bike. It will use the water as a carrier and travel all over your bike, into every little nook and cranny and does it magic there. And because it's water based it will make cleaning your bike on the weekend a lot easier. Yes it will wash off with water, but it will also take away all the dirt and grime.

Conclusion: They are both great products but used in very different ways. If you want to store it for a longer time: ACF50! If you use your bike regularly and you want an easy way to protect it while you are using it: FS365!

Disclaimer: Apart from being an avid Adventure Biker I also work for Scottoiler.

Thanks
Mattso
