In 2004 I bought a brand spanking new transit, it had 1 mile on the clock when I picked it up. It wasnt until recently when I sent it the bodyshop to make it look good again that I discovered there was already body filler on every single panel!
You'd be amazed how many brand spanking new cars need touch up and repairs before they are even registered. There is a body shop near where I work which does nothing but repair cars which have been damaged in transit or storage before they head for the show rooms.
Help from the car boffins please...

There you go dude, all's well that end's well
You gonna let them fix it or change, if it was me I would change it, you don't know what else might come to light next year.

yep, if it was me i would change that car as soon as possible , because you dont know what problems you going to have down the road with it, resale value and all that stuff,
because of the history the car has now, even with the car fixed, it will probably only be worth half of what you paid for it,
them lads in the shop will understand that,
anyway, its good news so it is

That's great news but totally expected from the dealers perspective.
I agree with others, swap the car mate, you don't want it to turn into a lemon.

Re: Help from the car boffins please...
So I went back to the car dealers today. They don't have anything like for like and are going to to let me know if or when something comes in over the next week or two.
At which point do you reckon I should be looking for a refund.
There is a VW 30 day 1000 mile exchange policy. Should I make sure that I don't go over either the 1000 mile mark or 30 day point?

You should tell them you would accept a lower milage / newer car as compensation for the aggravation and distress caused.
Failing that get yer money back now, why should you wait around for them...

You require a replacement now or your money back, if they are a dealer they have a pool of cars to call on.
Ask for your money and you may find thing will move on a pace

yep, i agree with Redmurty
also, dont drive the car, if anything happens that car when you are driving it, you wont have a leg to stand on, like a small crash or something like that
bring the car back to them and park it, and tell them you want you money back or a replacement car now, and if they say to give them a few days to get you a car, make sure you get that in writing, thats very important,
always get something in writing and signed by them, dont leave their shop without it,
if it were me, i would take the money, its fast and simple, and i would go and choose my own car,

Re: Help from the car boffins please...
ok...although you say the car was expensive, is that in the terms of "more than a few pounds"...or..... "it was at the top-end of the used prices for that model/year/mileage"?
Used bike/car prices, as you should know , are based on condition. If you paid the lowest price, then don't expect a top -line car.
