Push button control with automatic close.
And a did see this once on some big cast gates made to look very unlike a byway, the council sign was a big clue then the press once for access, much smaller than the 'private' sign.

We would love to put cattle grids in at Stonton, but unfortunately the Leicestershire Highways dept have refused to support our application (we would need planning permission) on the basis they have a policy not to increase the number of cattle grids on the network.

Are these lanes Byways? And therefore have a legal right for joe public to use. If not.... no-one goes down them, if they are byways, then local council has authority over them, ie to maintain, to clamp a permit system on, to re-classify them etc etc.
Give us a map link so we can see if it is a byway you are talking about.

LAT/LONG is 52'33.213N 000'55.046W - this is intersection of two roads. My understanding is they are actually considered to be normal unclassified 'field roads'. Our company farms the land as tenant of a large estate. We want a solution the gates that makes all users happy - ramblers, horses, pushbikes, 4x4 and trailbikers, but that also provides us as farmers with security for livestock and occasionally unwanted guests. A traditional gate does have the benefit of slowing traffic - particularily criminals working at night.

For me don't really care.
However a self closing gate is great for you farmers, as you never have to worry about a gate being left open and losing livestock. Having said that looking at the localmap of your area, there are no byways. If they are unclassified roads, then why put gates on them. Unless you are referring to gates into your fields. If the later is the case then, no-one apart from the land owner should be going past that gate anyway.
Not knowing the area too go you must bear in mind.
Round our way there are unclassified roads, that we can ride on, none allow access to a farmers field, and the signage for byways, re-stricted byways is pretty good. Even on my local byways, which are green lanes/off road there are no gates blocking the way, unless a TRO is on the byway, and therefore you get great big metal gates that need a code.
