TomTom uk praise

Post by bond_yzf »

I bought my urban rider over 2 years ago and after about 1 year the mount destroyed itself due to the vibrations on the bar above the clocks on my xt660z (owners of the xt will know what im on about),well low and behold it happened again last week so i made a quick phone call to tomtom again and explained what had happened and i did admit to them that the vibes from the bike were destroying the mount, after i got of the phone to them i rang touratech and purchased one of the fang dangle anti vibe mounts.

So today xmas eve a nice little free of charge parcel turns up from tom tom with a complete new powered mount incl power cable (retail £55) with about every different type of ram mount you can think off  including all different types of bar clamps etc

now i know some peeps will say the mount shouldnt have destroyed itself but i do quite a bit of off roading etc and the vibes are pretty bad up on that bar so after a year and a bit i can see why its foobarred, and tomtom could have quite easily said its out warranty pay for another and with all these extra ram mounts i can mount me new roadbook happy days

:)

I wouldn't accuse TomTom of being too generous mate- more like guilt IMO
They know damn well that Rider power cradles have always been of dodgy design & crap quality, which is a shame, because the units themselves are good.

The V1 Rider design was changed because they kept failing & the units stopped charging & falling off. I've still got my original Rider, which I can only use in the car now, as the power cradles are discontinued for the above reason.

the V2 cradles are slightly better, but they vibrate & become sloppy on ANY bike when used a lot, They don't jump off, but the power connections fail. I'm on my fourth power cradle at the moment (TomTom replaced the first one under warranty) but the other 2 I've had to buy @ around £50 each !

I reckon that's why they introduced the Urban Rider with the unpowered cradle - as most shorter journeys will be within the battery life of the unit, the shortcomings of the power cradle are hidden !

For cradle issues reason alone, I'm going over to Garmin & have just got myself a second hand Nuvi 550 to try out on my GSA.
It's a shame, because I've never had an actual TTR unit fail & I've got all my bikes hard wired for the Rider - but I'm fed up of their design issues costing me money ( and ending up with a Rider I can't use when I'm hundreds of miles away from home)

Had the same problem and brought another mount, it too started to fall to bits but managed to fix it.
I now take it off when not using it.
Called tomtom as they wereout of stock and the woman tought that they were just popular.
Tomtom are great units its the outher bits, mount and headset that let them down.

I have the tom tom rider V1 and suffered all the problems with it not charging on the bike so I did a very simple mod, just drill a hole through the casing flap to line up with where you plug in the home charger or car adaptor. Then by using your car adaptor lead pushed through the outer casing and connected to a 12 volt supply, have used it for years now using this method and works and charges a treat

All the posts above explain, why tomtoms are cheap on ebay.

Good that I did not buy one :)

I think it also depends on the person you speak to in the company.
Quite a few years back I had AXO boots and a year after I bought them, they were discontinued. I could not find a spare set of boot straps any more. Later that year I a saw a hot chick in AXO stand in Intermot and went with a very sad face to complain as a joke. Well the joke was on me - got the new set of straps delivered to my home the very next day :)
