Garmin Montana planning your route question

Post by Kinioo »

Hi all,

It has probably been covered somewhere here - if so, please redirect me.

Anyway,

What (program) do you use to plan your route on PC and then to get it exported to Garmin Montana City Navigator?

How do you open the route on the unit after export ??

i.e. I want to go from London to Brighton via B-roads etc and want to plan first...

Thanks,

Chris

I don't know how different the Montana is from other Garmin sat navs but I use Basecamp or Tyre.
Basecamp is hideously difficult at times but works and is worth trying to master it.
Tyre is easier, it uses Google maps. If you save the route you create in Tyre as a .gpx file you can transfer it to the Garmin.

Can you open. Gpx file in City Navigator and use it as standard turn by turn navigation or you have to use it with I. E. OS maps??

I've used Nav V & Zumo 660, both use .gpx files & City Navigator maps. I understood .gpx to be the Garmin standard.
When you send a route to Nav V & 660 the unit ask you if you want to import the new route (or words to that effect) when it is turned on.

Garmin city navigator is road routable ..o/s maps are not...so you only get a line lol......

The satnav uses its routing algoritum to decided where you go ....not all garmin are the same ....ha ha

Plan your route on your Computer. I use Basecamp.
Connect the Montana to the Computer.
Check that Basecamp on your computer can see that you,ve connected the Montana.
Up the top in Basecamp, you'll see a "Transfer" tab.
Click on that and follow the instructions to send the route to the Montana.
Once done, just follow the route on the Montana.

Hope that helps. I use Basecamp and a Zumo.

As others have said BaseCamp is the one you want. But I tend to plan my routes in my google maps then export to base camp. Just much easier

I had some problems with my Montana last week through France (in the car), it would keep locking up for no apparent reason when following a route, I'd notice it would have got stuck at the last junction and had not updated since. Tried to stop navigation and restart the route but would get a blank screen when returning to map.
Fortunately I had the same route programmed into a second Garmin Sat nav (I use two, one with 3D view, one with 2D zoomed out view to check it's not sending me through the centre of town when there's a ring road or bypass that would be better) and this was fine. same route downloaded from Basecamp, same latest map files.
Only way to cure it was to power it off and restart.
Also had an issue where a long route with more than 50 shaping points would load up and allow a preview, but would not allow me to follow it real time.
Looks like I'll have to stick to the old one for foreign trips.
