Post by dsb79 »

Looking for a new nav unit, I have had a Garmin 660 previosly and got on fine with it, but would like some of your opinions on which to go for.

I pondered the same a couple of weeks ago, ended up with the Garmin 590lm, I've only used it a couple of times but up to now I'm positive I've made the right decision. Ordered it online from Thurgo.co.uk, who were the cheapest I could find, it arrived a couple of days later.

having had my trusty 550 break down on hol's last year
I had the chance to try the tom tom and 590lm back to back
basically used the tom tom for a week and a half
couldn't get on with the screen and font sizes
plus not enough mounts etc. on the model I tried
so on our return journey stopped at the shop I bought it (Louis.de)
and as I had only tried it out for a day
and it was still boxed and as new
they changed it for the 590lm with cash adjustment
put it on bike and instantly knew it was the right choice
bigger screen larger font's
so I could read it without glasses if the need arose
what clinched was the extras in the box
mount wise etc.
this is my experience others might differ

and if you still need more info
you'll find it here

it is funny with new satnavs. had a play around in a shop with newest TomTom and it seems to be - different to older generations.

a friend at work bought 390lm, and apart from it being faster it still seem to suffer from the same issues as my old nuvi550:
- poor routing software
- poor routing algorithms

I am seriously thinking of just buying a waterproof smartphone and use it for sat nav needs :S

I bought the 590lm this summer and rode it around Eastern Yerp for six weeks. It was excellent and there are no buts.

BTW, does anyone know how to put US and world maps onto a Zumo?

Personal experiences. I have a 660 and a 550 both will take you through the centre of cities. Budapest on a Friday morning is a shit. Then of one junction and back on again at the next as it saves 10 metres or 5 seconds it does not matter which mode you put them into. There have been so many times on the last trip that the 660 has taken down a back roads totally ignoring the main road or motorway that can be seen as I'm riding along. The mapping software is totally illogical. In comparison my mates TomTom kept use on the main roads and more importantly kept use from going through centre of city's. Favouring the ring roads.
I've given up on Garmin and with satnavs being so exspensive I now just use the my iPhone. Which is as good if not better. Save the £400 and use it to buy a waterproof case for £20 and spend the rest on fuel
