It's a shame thete needs to be a constant battle for our rights of access to our countryside.. but I believe that access will eventually be improved to sensible levels for every user group. By insistence for public rights.

Ramblers and the new zealous converts to walking will never be happy until ALL other users are excluded from existing Rights of Way from Bridlepaths to single track roads inclusive.

It is consistent with the current societal trends where everybody wants their "rights" to the exclusion of other people's, fuelled by "must have instant gratification".

Difficult to see those trends reversing any time soon.

You would have thought there would be enough space for all of us to enjoy legal outdoor activities in Great Britain considering that broadly speaking 90% of the entire land mass isn't built on. Of course, that includes lakes and rivers and mountains etc etc. but it is still a very high percentage of the available 'area'.

Perhaps the problem is that 50% of the entire land mass of GB is owned by just 1% of the population .
Broadly speaking again, that means 0.7 million people own 50% of the land; and the other 69.3 million people own 50%.

Lately I've noticed a few general posts on the Irish potato famine, where poor people locked themselves in to die, and of mass emigrations from private farmlands given over to sheep. Government is trying to criminalise trespass. Parks authorities can dictate to householders what and where, and even to visitors, and use of trails and roads. Charging people to walk up mountains. Car park charges at beaches. Farmlands are fenced off, they can shoot your dog etc, so the remaining paths and rights of way have become highly fought over... but reducing.

Lucky we live in a caring democracy.
