Gwyrne Fawr closed

Post by PaulinBont »

Did a walk in the Brecon Beacons yesterday up to Gwyrne Fawr reservoir.

I noticed that the BOAT passed the reservoir is now closed and traffic prohibited.
Since when ? This must have been a fantastic By-Way to ride!

We were lucky to have ridden this route about 15 years ago. We started from Brecon with a bit of road work to 'Talgarth' and then up into the mountains via the 'Y Das' and down the other side past the 'Gwyarne Fawr' reservoir before popping out back onto a minor road just northeast of 'Crickhowell'. It was awesome and we nicknamed it the 'brown trousers route' because it had some large rock steps on a hairpin turn about 10 minutes into the climb which were an absolute mission to get over. As far as I remember, one of the bikes fried it's clutch out trying to negotiate them (a KTM 250exc) and I faceplanted into a rock on the trail down the other side (on my KTM400exc).
I think redbikejohn has some photos of that trip and that route. 8-)

I know Robin Hicken of the TRF got it reopened in the pre-Mario era of the TRF.

No idea what happened afterwards

The rock steps/turn became a lot easier in later years as a 'round the top in one' route opened up so you could zoom around. First time I did it was on a xr600, not easy.
Yamaha tenere 700

I have done it that hairpin was a commitment job no hope of dabbing half way round, cracking trail.

Was it closed’ on the quiet’ or was there a fight by the TRF?

When I was a member of the TEF , I can’t remember a campaign to keep it open?

Another fantastic Byway lost to BBNPA , just like Sarn Helen!

It's now a restricted byway (no motorised vehicles), I can't recall exactly what happened but it was probably a RUPP before NERC. I believe it was fought for but doomed from the outset.
It's also now graded.
