'Pointless' depends upon your point of view, glass half full or glass half empty.
Apart from a few seconds of computer time what does it cost? I might tend to agree that it may not succeed on its own but it is worth a try and a positive step to record that we care.

I just signed mate, for the record there is no one that knows for sure what is and what is not pointless, so thank you for raising the petition. A petition needs 100,000 signatures to just be eligible for debate, never mind actually debated. This will never get those, and even if it did would not be debated. It's hashtag activism at its worst. You want to stop lanes closing? DO something. Write to your MP, get local support, demonstrate etc. But you won't. Let's not be naive here, unless a petition has a huge support on a politically sensitive topic, it's a waste of time. I think the term is "slacktivism". But hey, if you think you're making a difference and it makes you feel warm and fuzzy, crack on.
