I use a couple of pumps with float/tilt switches in sumps for my land drainage.
Not the same usage as your situation.
I'm just thinking laterally....you could fit a header tank, use your pump to fill that, then use gravity to distribute the water from the header to where you want it, you could fit a tap/stop clock to the end of the hose/pipe.
You'd have to hang about whilst the header tank fills, but if the header is big enough, it could be more efficient.

Thanks Steve - problem is... I'm pumping from 9 metres deep, of which sometimes as much as 8 metres is full of water (like right now after all the rain we've had). And then it must pump out 75 metres at ground level via hose to the large bins we place in the paddocks for the geegees. That's why I'm using an 1100 watt, 6000 litre/hr Flotec Sub8 pump (cost over 400 euros). I don't think a header tank wouldn't give me the pressure (unless I mounted it on a bloody tower or something). At present I can fill 10 x 90 litre bins in about 15 minutes, even 75 metres away from the well down an 18mm hose - which is pretty good.

We also use the well as a rainwater storage tank for water gathered by the gutters on our barn - so it gets topped up with every shower. The system is working well actually and I'm happy with my set up - if only I could remember to turn the f*cker off... :)

start the pump
remember to always set the alarm on your mobile phone at this point, as a routine
(allow enough time for the pump use)
keep phone with you at all times (most of us do)
(wrap phone in plastic bag if raining, place in close pocket)
jump like f*ck when the alarm goes off
try to remember why you set the alarm
