I asked on here a few months ago but no information regarding doing it, we just finished doing our garage floor with the advice of a industrial coating expert for best results

Here is what you need

1-liquid degreaser
2- hydrochloric acid
3-water via garden hose
4-epoxy resin paint (comes in 2 parts) x 2 as one first coat and 2nd coat
5-Hard brush
6-rollers /brushes/paint scrapper
7-tape

1-First we washed the garage floors down with water and washing up liquid and scrapped crap of the floor

2-we then washed the garage floor down with liquid degreaser and hard brushed it in cleaning as best we can patches/stains on the floor

3- wash down with water fully

4-tape edge where resin will be applied to/stop

5- while floor is still wet apply hydrochloric acid (2 parts water 1 acid) floor should bubble and hard brush in for acid etching, leave for 30 minutes but dont let it dry into the floor

6-wash down floor fully with water and hard brush



7-mix epoxy resin with hardener and wait 30 minutes, start to apply to edges first and roller main areas after. epoxy has a 3 hour cure time so all the tin must be used

8-allow to dry for 24-36 hours

9-Apply second coat but this time running the roller in one direction as best can

Happy with results (thumbs)


Before we started, dust all over floor and dirt After we washed and degreased as best we can (walls painted before we started floor)
We applied edge tape before we applied the hydrochloric acid just to be safe for kneeling on floor even after we washed it down Applied acid washing down First coat Second coat

You'll need some nice new oak planks for the pit now.

Looks great. I think the acid must make all the difference, as I still get mine lifting in a few places, despite applying pva in advance.

I brushed my last garage floor, straight on, no pva, and had a hard durable finish for many years. However I haven't achieved such a hard finish this time with the roller and pva beforehand.

The Acid pickles the floor giving a rough texture similar to sanding,this enables the paint to get an excellent adhesion.

I'm very fortunate to have a garage and its just how I want it

But now I have double garage envy :pinch:

Thanks for comments, old guy we brought the house from used it as his workshop as he worked from home, 2 RCD boards & water fitted which is good.

We are going to use it as bike storage/workshop & gym

We only just moved in a few months ago and house is in a right state as we got it at a great price but that also reflects all the work that needs doing

We decided to start on the most important room first which the wife agreed on THE GARAGE! (thumbs)

My friend is pulling out his kitchen so he will give us his old one, we have got some unit to fit on the walls and worktops on the side to fit this week. We have some checker plate steel to fit to a section of worktop where i will start to learn working on my own engines :pinch: :whistle:

Want to also fit a wood-burner later on

The guy who advised us on how to do the floor has been in the industrial paint application business all his life and told us prepping floor first is most important by cleaning with degresser and scrapping convex spots up, washing down with water after this is very important and so is not letting the acid dry in to the floor as both can cause the epoxy to flake later

Also waiting between 24-36 hours between 1st & 2nd coat, and then 72 hours after last coat to fully seal/dry

Applying to much can cause it to flake off as well, 2 coats is great but in some places another would be good however tins come in a large size which after mixing whole tin needs to be finished within a few hours, epoxy cost £70 a coat so all in (brick wall paint, epoxy, acid, degresser, tools) from how it was to now is £200

Yes my thought also, just waiting for a good deal on ebay. Already looking :whistle:
