Came across this today - a V20 Merc engine from a WW2

And they had 3 of those per boat for a top wack of 40 knots

Fun fact, my Dad was a gunner on a British MGB that captured a German S-Boat (the Brits called them E-Boats). They took it 'under tow,' then had to leave it behind when they got chased by a German destroyer. Sadly, when they first boarded it some of the German crew panicked and went over the side, and they couldn't pull them back up again.

There used to be the mtb 102 moored on the Thames and they had a top speed of 48 knots light and 43 knots laden ,had about 3500 hp

Ironically, after both WWI and WWII the Costal Forces were pretty much written out of history...my Dad said the were regarded as a bit of an embarrassment by the deep water Royal Navy, especially as most of them (my Dad included) were RNVR, and not real members of the Grey Funnel Line.

Strange really as, then or now, there are few more effective naval vessels in terms of bang for buck than a very small, very fast boat with an appropriate set of weapons on board. Now you could mount missiles as well as torpedoes. The Iranians can manage it, but we can't.
