Trev was telling us about your bad injuries [ I didn't get the details as I need a hearing aid .. to come tho] but my ears picked up when I heard your name. Sounded really bad. Forgot you now had a crf250Rally.. I got one too, but noisy engine and lack of time and money to fix.
I half recognise your ride pics .. could be anywhere knowing you lol, but looks near the ranges? or towards llandovery? .. or even Druids?
(actually that first one could be over from llandod, facing wbin?.. edit .. or 50 gate lane? ... aw ... i give up !! lol)

Good you are back up and out on the bike.
old injury clonked back at the end of the summer, much improved now, well getting back to baseline anyway, thanks. Yeh you got it Druids and round about not done it before, tried and bottled it in the snow solo on the GS, speaking to a local shepherd it maybe a one and only run over it, he seemed to think the annual right of way had been curtailed, in all honesty I did'nt know one way or the other but wanted to tick it off. I did a few recee's around and there were no soldiers or security evident over the proceeding days, but you never can tell for sure, but the main "permanent dedicated ranges" were definitely unused. If I need any CRF gen I'll point it your way. That day I stopped in the Owls on the way up and it was rammed 30min wait for a bacon buttie etc, on return I just caught the West End door open and walked over Gaynors freshly mopped floor to catch a last hot chocalate. Just a handfull of the old suspects there, shame really the social side of the cafe (bikewise) is much deminished. Another pic to keep it relevant. The shit job of post trail spin cleaning and finding broken bits under the crap. Did manage to find some challenges on the way back better not post any pics of that sillyness lets just say the ruts were deep and plentifull and I am too old for that especially on the CRF fat bellied girl. Hope your doing OK, happy trails.

yeah .. Druids .. i think you took the right decision not to go there solo .. Fred took me , once, 2017/18, and it was icy enough not to sink too far, but the muddy rut bits were deep and i dont think anyone would get out of them solo, especially a gs12 lol. It was only boxing day permitted then, but very interesting ... YOur pic, i recognised the colour of the grass.

wrong place to post, I know .. but the crf250rally ?? Image20220612_180841 (2) by gary boy, on Flickr
I have come to think, after a few years of ownership of a crf250L, that it is best to keep the crf's as near standard as possible. I tried to make it into a proper trail bike, but just basic and cheap, not the full blown amendments. I lowered the suspension a bit,
Image20220326_154014 (2) by gary boy, on Flickr
lowered the gearing a bit,
Image20181101_140605 (2) by gary boy, on Flickr
and put more knobby tyres on, but in the end it was worse on road and worse on trails, or at least nowhere a good as a proper trail bike. Hondas idea was always a good average balance.
The trend now, in tyres, is Dunlop D606 rear, MT21 front. I got MT21's front and rear, hoping to do a lot of back road work , but on trails, the rear does in fact squirm all over the place up hill.

Other combinations of makes seem quite popular too, but i will just go D606 rear next time, as the front is not too bad.
You will know that the suspension is horrendous; ok for the road [with oem tyres] with a light rider, but off road, downright dangerous! I lowered the rear an inch by drilling a hole in the u clamp of the shock 19mm higher, but although lowered, it is still awful. Minky likes the YSS rear shock, as it is fine, and not too expensive.
Once i did the rear, the front was actually frightening, I put k -tech spring in,
o no .. race tech

plus 10w oil on the one fork, leaving the other fork oem .... is a bit better, but still not very good overall.
The clutch has held out so far, but i have not used the bike for months, due to a horrible clacking noise from the engine, .. money and time to fix, so unused at home lol. The crf250L had a new clutch plates ck1313 I think, plus Barnet HD springs. which cured the slip.

The L was better handling than the Rally [off road], as you can feel the weight of the [rally] fairing on the front, causing dip etc.

the Rally has a better engine tho.

I shouldn't have sold the L, but I got a Ebike which was just in time for covid lol.

I hope i can get the Rally back up running right again, as i am beginning the miss the trails again.

garyboy...that's a good comment about keeping the bike standard...I know sometimes manufacturers make mahoosive mistakes with components and set ups but a lot of the time they get it 'right'. I had the same experience years ago with my '93 Suzuki RMX250. Once I'd geared it lower, changed the exhaust, changed the tyres, raised the bars, etc. etc. it ran like a dog in comparison to how it ran straight out of the box from Suzuki...

p.s. this was before the internet existed and I bought it new over the phone from E.T. James in Rhayader who met met me in a transit van halfway between London and mid-wales...top service 8-) .

Not today but yesterday. Close enough.
Good day in the Peaks until it threw it down at about 3.00. Quickly sought out the Old Smithy in Monyash.
