Anyone here on them ? I ask here only because most bikers these days seem to be of an elderly age, ripe for heart attacks. I've finally had to give in to pressure from my GP and start on them next week, and I'm wondering how common/bad side affects can be.
Thanx.

Re: Statins ?
One of my Cardiologist mates used to say that he was taking statins so he could eat exactly what he felt like.
Pretty much all my patients were on statins and in terms of side affects it was extremely well tolerated.
Unless you have a good reason not to be on them then go with what your GP has suggested

Re: Statins ?
I've been on a big dose, 80mg, since 2018 when I had a stent fitted. No issues.
Just along for the ride.

Thanx people.
I was advised a year back but chose to up my game with fitness and diet. Got my cholesterol down from 4.9 to 4.7 but the algorithms still say I am at risk. So here we go.

Re: Statins ?
May be worth looking at the papers he uses as evidence. 2009 was the Jupiter study. So many more studies since then, so many more patients protected.
Not having a go at all, of course, always good to collect a wide range of opinions and weigh up benefit vs risks.

Re: Statins ?
NICE guidance has recently been published to increase use of Statins.
Worth reading: https://www.bhf.org.uk/what-we-do/news- ... nd-strokes
NICE are not quick to recommend treatments as they spend a good while researching and evaluating current evidence until they do.

Re: Statins ?
My father collapsed & died with a heart attack at 53, his brother died of an heart attack a few months later at 51, their brother having died at 39 from one after a game of tennis, with that background in the family I’ve had many heart checks & never any problems found, my doctor offered statins, I swerved them for 12 months, then thought well maybe I should, been on them a year or two, not noticed any side effects as of yet.

Re: Statins ?
Read, and taken in thank you. Seems the most common side effect is muscle pain, which ironically was the original reason I went to my GP. I get bad muscle pains at (only) night which can only be relieved with movement ,so I'm up in the middle of every night shaking about to ease it. At least if Statins create pains by day, it'll at least balance out the 24hrs ! I swim 800metres daily, use the gym and eat pretty healthy, maybe only few bad grams of butter and a cake or two per week. So I've really made every effort before relenting to meds !Godspeed wrote: ↑Thu May 04, 2023 10:57 pm NICE guidance has recently been published to increase use of Statins.

I've weighed it all up by considering the possible side effect of not taking the Statins, which we may all agree could be a little worse ?
