He was also a Patron of the official enemies of trail riding ...GLEAM, but we won't hold that against him.
Interesting fact...in the 1970s, he visited the IoM TT in his position at the ACU and got introduced to some of the racers and their bikes.
This was in the days when the Dunlop triangular profile racing tyre (think TT100, if you are old enough to remember them) was the tyre to have.
"Why are your tyres such a stupid shape?" he asked in his usual ,ahem, forthright manner.
A man from Dunlop was summoned to explain that the triangular profile put more rubber on the road when cornering.
"Ha, well, if you had a round profile, you'd put more rubber on the road all the time. Think about it!"
and he was right!

It was just another example of his style, asking (sometimes stupid) questions in an abrupt and condescending way, some liked that, but many others found it, and him, offensive.
I found his spitting image puppet to be more likeable than the actual person; not that I don't feel for any bereaved family, but to me, along with the other royals, he represented a UK we should have left behind many years ago.
